Tokyo Revengers Manga Put on Indefinite Hiatus

Tokyo Revengers has reportedly been placed on indefinite hiatus.

According to a post from reputable anime and manga industry leaker Ryokutya2089, which was then translated by Siliconera, the Tokyo Revengers manga has been forced to take a break due to multiple people involved with series creator Ken Wakui catching the COVID-19 virus. While the report does not specifically state if Wakui or any of the staff members working on the manga have caught the virus, it does state that the infections have made it difficult to continue production on the series for the time being. A return date for the manga, which is currently in the middle of publishing its final story arc, has yet to be announced.

This is the second time that the coronavirus has affected production on the franchise. The live-action Tokyo Revengers movie was delayed due to production issues stemming from the pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns. The movie was eventually released in 2021, where it became the highest grossing live-action movie released in Japan that year.

The series tells the story of Takemichi Hanagaki, a twenty-something burn-out who is devastated to find out that the only woman he ever loved, Hinata Tachibana, has been murdered by the violent Tokyo Manji Gang. After being pushed in front of an oncoming train, Takemichi wakes up 12 years in the past, in the body of his teenage self, with all of his memories and knowledge of the coming years intact. Determined to change the past and save Hinata, Takemichi joins the dangerous gang and tries to steer them into a more positive future.

Tokyo Revengers was created by Ken Wakui and was first published in 2017. In less than four years, the manga achieved a worldwide circulation of over 50 million copies and has become publisher Kodansha's biggest hit since Attack on Titan. An anime adaptation, produced by The Heroic Legend of Arslan studio Liden Films, aired its first season in 2021. The anime series is planned to return with an adaptation of the Christmas Showdown arc, which has been confirmed to be in production. A return date for the anime has yet to be announced.

The manga is available digitally from Kodansha USA and will be released in print by Seven Seas Entertainment. The Tokyo Revengers anime is available for streaming via Crunchyroll. An international release for the live-action adaptation has not been announced at this time.
