Marvel Unmasks a Resurrected X-Man for the First Time in New Variant Series

A longtime X-Men character is going unmasked for the first time since her resurrection in a new series of Judgment Day variant covers by Lucas Werneck and Ashley Witter.

Marvel released four new variant covers for the upcoming A.X.E.: Judgment Day, a massive event series that crosses over The Avengers, Eternals and X-Men. The covers, which you can view below, star Destiny, Echo, Thena and Jean Grey, all of whom will be powerful players in the war to come, in the front and center of the action.

Destiny, who first appeared in 1981's The Uncanny X-Men #141, recently returned from the dead during 2021's Inferno #1. Since her resurrection, Destiny has quickly taken a seat on Krakoa's Quiet Council and is now one of the leaders in charge of guiding the island forward. "Said to be mutantkind's most powerful clairvoyant, she may know more about the war to come than anyone else...," Marvel teased regarding the character's role in Judgment Day. Jean Grey also fights for the X-Men, as she's the current co-leader of the team and longtime Marvel character who first appeared in 1963's The X-Men #1

Echo first appeared in 1999's Daredevil #9. "Equipped with unmatched fighting skills, this former street-level hero now burns brightly with the power of the Phoenix Force. But does she have enough control of her new cosmic power to assist her fellow Avengers?" Marvel said. Thena, meanwhile, is one of the Eternal's strongest warriors, though Marvel teased she could potentially end up switching sides in the upcoming event. "Thena doesn't always agree with the ways of her species," the publisher hinted. "Will she fall in line with the Eternals target mutantkind or cause a schism amongst their ranks?"

Judgment Day kicks off with Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men #1 in May and A.X.E.: Eve of Justice #1 in June. "It's drama for the people who know what has been going on because it's secrets coming out and you're seeing people's responses to them," writer Kieron Gillen previously said of the event. "It's really getting people on board for the journey on the way in. The Avengers also have some significant stakes in the story based on how lied to they've been by everybody from the start and the fact that they're literally sitting inside a Celestial. You should not have made your headquarters a Celestial if you did not want to be involved in this [Laughs]."

Werneck and Witter's A.X.E.: Judgment Day variant covers go on sale later this year.
