Warning: the following contains spoilers for Tower of God, Chapter 514, “The One Hight Above 01”, by SIU, now available on Webtoon.
White’s demise has both been something that fans clamor for, and fret about. On the one hand, he is an incredibly dangerous threat to Bam, while on the other, he is an extremely fun character who can make any fight entertaining with his charisma. So his departure is a bittersweet moment. But in Chapter 514, creator Siu cleverly leaves the door open for White’s return, so fans can always look forward to his next appearance.
The chapter starts with White’s flashback to when he was still Hoaqin. He saw his sibling Vincente, and they discussed their ambitions towards matching their father’s strength. Hoaqin had already felt the hunger for power at this point, so it can be assumed that the demon later enhanced this desire. But the more surprising part is that Vincente is actually the one that gave Hoaqin/White the book about the soul-sucking demon, which means he is the person that actually coaxed Hoaqin onto his destructive path. White even suspects that he had already mastered the soul-sucking technique before Hoaqin.
It now makes perfect sense why Vincente is the one taking over their body after White/Hoaqin’s retreat. He could be an extremely conniving individual that had just been waiting for Hoaqin’s mental state to weaken so he could take over. In Chapter 262, it was revealed that only Hoaqin can be the main personality because he is the only person that made the deal with the demon. However, now that White has lost most of his powers along with Hoaqin, the only other person that had studied the demon –Vincente – can take control over this body.
Vincente says he has no grudge against Bam or any of his friends and convinces Aguero to spare his life. He even managed to join their party going forward. Given what is revealed in this Chapter, he could be even more dangerous than White, because he can pretend to be harmless and hide his abilities. And when the right moment comes, he could strike and become a great threat. Aguero notes that he seemed like a smart person though, so hopefully he has not let his guard down.
Even assuming that Vincente is truly friendly, there is still the lingering threat of White’s return. While it is true that he lost most of his powers to Bam, Aguero, and Rak, his soul still remains inside Vincente. He could be waiting to amass enough power before coming back out. Though it might take a very long while because there were billions of souls that White had gathered and he already lost most of them.
Besides, as this chapter’s title and the end conversation hint, someone even higher up is about to show up. Ha Jinsung is talking with Maschenny in this scene, and she is a Jahad Princess, so this “someone” should be even higher than Maschenny. This means it could either be Jahad or one of the Family Heads of the Ten Great Families. It is unlikely to be Jahad at this point, but any one of the Family Heads is fair game.
Considering the story so far, the probable candidate is Po Bidau Gustang, whom Jahad had ordered to be destroyed. It could also be the head of the Lo Po Bia Family, who built the Nest that Bam is currently attacking. But should White’s father Arie Hon appear at any point, it could just be the jolt that shocks White out of his shell, because he is the sole reason White became who he is. So if and when White reemerges, it is probably going to be a tense confrontation with Arie Hon.
All these are exciting prospects for future developments, since White is still as unpredictable as ever, whether he will remain a foe or is coming back as a friend (or neither) is a major unknown. The only definite is that his reappearance will add plenty of drama into the story.
