The Boruto Anime Reveals the Origin of One of the Manga’s Famous Vehicles

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 179, "Victor's Scheme," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

In the Boruto manga, Kawaki's arc began with the famous airship crashing down just outside the borders of Konoha. This led to the Village Hidden in the Leaves finding the kid and the ensuing battle for his soul, with Jigen sending Kara's deadliest agents to retrieve the teen, who is the vessel for the leader's rebirth.

However, while we didn't know exactly why Jigen was transporting his most prized possession, Boruto Episode 179 fills in the gap, acting as a precursor to Kawaki being discovered by the heroic shinobi and taken to Naruto.

According to the anime, it's all due to Victor's machinations as he tries to scheme his way to immortality. He's faking being sick in Kara's infirmary, citing a deficit of chakra due to the fight against Konoha's elite in which Deepa was killed, but really, Victor's there to steal intel on Kawaki. He hacks the data system Amado set up and pulls info on Kawaki's body, hoping to use it to fix his own broken frame.

But when he meets Jigen and Amado, who are discussing training for Kawaki, Victor gets a golden opportunity to transport the kid and pull off a theft. Jigen wants Amado to rush military training at a deserted location, all part of his "Phase Three," but he's concerned if they transport the vessel, they'll be spotted. Ninja villages do have sensory teams out there scouting, as well as Rangers like Sasuke and Sai; plus, the Hokage still deploys shinobi such as Ino.

Basically, surveillance is high and Jigen doesn't want to get caught as the nations are on high alert after the Kaguya War. Victor, though, confirms he has a unique blimp that can't be detected. The chakra signature would be masked, and this is the airship we saw in the manga. Amado's skeptical and makes it clear it will be piloted by remote only, with no one on board as he doesn't want anyone tampering with the vessel. Jigen agrees although he doesn't think Victor is bold enough to double-cross him.

Well, he's dead wrong because as the blimp takes off with robotic soldiers on board, Victor starts hacking the mainframe. He wants to pilot it, changing its trajectory to somewhere he can't be tracked, all so he can experiment on Kawaki himself. But as soon as he takes over control of the autopilot system, his hacking device starts going haywire. He panics as the airship crashes, knowing he'll have to answer to Jigen. Even if it can't be traced back to him, he'll be held responsible for his faulty vessel by Amado and Jigen.

The episode ends with the drones around Kawaki's stasis cell as the airship goes down, with Victor scared of what Jigen is going to do to him.
