Soul Eater: Will There Ever Be a Season 2?

Soul Eater is an anime and manga series well on its way to becoming a new classic. During its publication run, the series ranked right under the Shonen Jump giants NarutoOne Piece and Bleach in popularity, becoming a major cult hit. This went not only for the manga, but also its anime adaptation. Despite the manga's popularity and long run, the anime was comparatively short with only 51 episodes.

Eventually diverging greatly from the then still running manga, Soul Eater told a storyline by the end that would make it hard to make a new season. Here's what the show was about and why there has yet to be a second season over ten years after the first one came to an end.

The Plot of Soul Eater

Soul Eater takes place in the Death Weapon Meister Academy, set an the otherworldly city. Here, people train to transform into powerful living weapons, while others train as their handlers, known as Meisters. The protagonist, Maka, is the Meister for Soul Eater, who has the power to turn into a scythe. By completing his training of consuming the souls of 99 evil people and 1 witch, Soul Eater will become an even stronger death scythe.

The main villain is the witch Medusa, who wishes to revive the dark god Asura and turn innocent humans into evil kishin. These events lead to alliances among the Death Weapon Meister Academy students and Medusa in order to face an even greater threat. The anime ran from 2008 to 2009, produced by studio Bones and later licensed by Funimation. It would receive both a normal broadcast around 6:00 pm and a late-night version with additional footage befitting the macabre, spooky series. It would even be broadcast on Adult Swim when it finally came to America a few years later. Unfortunately, this didn't result in any continuation of the series.

Soul Eater Anime Opening Resonance With Town And Moon

Soul Eater's anime ended over ten years ago, which was actually before the manga it was based on came to an end. Around halfway throughout its run the anime had already caught up to the manga and, from there, went off into an original direction. Thus, by the time that the manga came to its conclusion years later, its ending was much different than the one the show had.

The reason Soul Eater lacks a second season is that there can't easily be one. The show would have to have an even more original premise for its continuation, as it diverged too greatly from the manga by its end to simply adapt the chapters that came after the first show's finale. The best solution would be a wholesale remake of the series, starting over and adapting the manga more faithfully like what's been done with Fullmetal AlchemistFruits Basket and Shaman King.
