One Piece Film: Red Drops Its First Teaser Trailer

The upcoming One Piece Film: Red has gotten its first teaser trailer.

The short trailer gives fans a sneak peek at the movie's central antagonist: Patrick Redfield, aka Red the Aloof. Moreover, it confirms One Piece Film: Red will premiere on Aug. 6, 2022.

The new movie, which will be overseen by One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda and be canon to the series's storyline, will focus on Red-Haired Shanks and a new female character. Shanks is the captain of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the Four Emperors of the New World, a title bestowed upon the four most powerful pirates who reside in the second half of the Grand Line. He is notable for inspiring series protagonist Monkey D. Luffy to become a pirate and seek out the titular treasure. Moreover, Shanks is the person who gave Luffy his iconic straw hat.

The ongoing One Piece manga series made its premiere in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump on July 22, 1997, with the first anime episode debuting in Japan two years later on Oct. 20. The series has experienced immense success with more than 490 million copies of the manga sold worldwide and the anime earning a net profit of ¥77.474 billion ($817 million) as of September 2020. One Piece has spawned a wealth of adaptations like light novels, music, video games, a live-action television series, a kabuki play and of course, tie-in films.

Beyond Oda serving as executive producer, the creative team for One Piece Film: Red includes anime industry-veterans Goro Taniguchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Mobile Fighter G Gundam) as the director and Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece: Heart of Gold, One Piece Film: Gold) as the screenwriter.

It has been an exciting time for One Piece fans with the anime recently hitting an astounding 1,000 episodes. To celebrate the landmark achievement, Crunchyroll released a special AR filter that allows users to join the Straw Hat Pirates and create their own wanted poster. The streaming service has also teamed up with Anime NYC and Midtown Comics to launch a special photo contest. The winner will receive a one-year subscription to Crunchyroll, weekend passes to Anime NYC 2022 and a $100 gift card to Midtown Comics.

These celebrations and the upcoming release of One Piece Film: Red show that even after 1,000 episodes and 1,032 manga chapters, excitement and love for the series are still high, which is a testament to the story's overall quality. The One Piece anime series is available to stream on Funimation and Crunchyroll.
