My Hero Academia: Bakugo May Have Reformed – But His Personality Hasn’t

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 335, "Zygotes” by Kohei Horikoshi, Caleb Cook and John Hunt, available now in English from Viz Media.

My Hero Academia characters are infamous for their over-exaggerated personalities and hyperbolic temperaments, none more so than Class 1-A's Katsuki Bakugo. Many fans expected a mellowed-out version of his character moving forward since he apologized to Izuku Midoriya, but Bakugo proves in Chapter 335 that he is still as foul-mouthed as ever.

Right after Class 1-A put a stop to Deku's solo vigilante campaign, Bakugo apologized for his previous horrible behavior towards him. One of My Hero Academia's most heartfelt moments ensued as Bakugo recounted his image of Deku from when they were children to the present. He revealed that he'd always kept Deku at arm’s length because the latter's genuine selflessness and heroic spirit, despite not having a Quirk, made him feel insecure.

Bakugo rounded off his apology by stating that he didn't expect it to change the relationship between them. Earlier chapters showed him attempting to mind his attitude around Midoriya by using his proper name, instead of the derogatory nickname, "Deku," Bakugo had given him when they were younger. It's clear that he meant his apology and is attempting to repair their friendship as best as he can, but that in no way changes his personality.

Since his introduction, Bakugo has made no attempt to tone down his aggressive personality. He may be a hero in training but he's never been a goody-two-shoes. From close friends to teachers and even immediate family members, no one is safe from Bakugo's sharp tongue. He's quick to pin insulting nicknames to his peers and enemies alike, but there's usually no malice behind them. Despite having a personality more suited for villainy, Bakugo would never walk down that path. When he was invited to join the League of Villains, he rejected them instantly, stating he wanted to be a hero like All Might and that would never change.

In Chapter 335, Midoriya was once again on the receiving end of one of Bakugo's rants. While discussing training regimens, Midoriya mentions that Bakugo had offered to help him complete One For All by sparring with him. However, Bakugo immediately takes offense at this and claims he said no such thing, asking if a villain had ripped Midoriya's ears off during his adventures. Apparently, he'd only wanted to test the strength of his new Cluster explosions. What better opponent than the holder of one of My Hero Academia's strongest Quirks?

It's possible that Bakugo did plan on helping strengthen One For All and Midoriya, but he'd never admit to that. He's demonstrated willingness to help Midoriya master One For All in the past and often gives insightful advice about Quirks and understanding their weaknesses to those around him. One might ask why Bakugo would prefer to keep such a positive aspect of himself under wraps, but the reason is clear: he's got a reputation to uphold.
