Marvel Teases Thor’s New Secret Origin Involving the X-Men’s Phoenix

The secret origin of Marvel's Thor, which have a connection to the X-Men's Phoenix, will be revealed in Avengers: 1,000,000 B.C.

Marvel announced that a new Avengers: 1,000,000 B.C. will release this July and will delve into the secret origin of the Asgardian God of Thunder. The publisher also released a teaser poster for the announcement which shows a symbol of the X-Men's Phoenix. No further details were released beyond that, though Marvel said more information would soon be available.

Thor's backstory revealed in AVENGERS: 1,000,000 B.C

The Lady Phoenix was one of the members of Avengers: 1,000,000 B.C., an early incarnation of Earth's Mightiest Heroes formed over a million years ago when the planet needed to be defended right at the dawn of prehistoric human civilization. Other members of the group included Odin (Thor's father), Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, Agamotto, Black Panther and Starbrand.

In 2021's Avengers #43 -- by Jason Aaron, Javier Garrón, David Curiel and VC's Cory Petit -- we learn that Lady Phoenix is actually Thor's mother. While the God of Thunder is inclined to believe that Gaea, the Goddess of the Earth, gave birth to him before he was adopted by Freyja 'Frigga' Freyrdottir, Lady Phoenix says this was a lie. "A necessary one," she tells him in the issue. "A reason for you to do what I knew your father never would. Protect the Earth. But believe me when I say... You would not exist if not for the Phoenix." The cosmic force further explains that the Phoenix Force, itself, didn't even remember it was Thor's mother until the Final Host attacked Earth earlier on in the series.

Since then, Thor has had a bit of a complicated relationship with the Phoenix Force. In Avengers #54 -- by Aaron, Juan Frigeri, Curiel and Petit -- Thor reveals that he can harness the power of the Phoenix Force when he faces an evil version of himself from another reality. While this evil version comes equipped with the powers of the Dark Phoenix, Echo helps Thor embrace the fact that he's the "son of the Thunderbird." Thor then summons a blast of the Phoenix's flames that appear in the shape of a lightning bolt.

The Phoenix first appeared in 1976's The Uncanny X-Men #101 by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum in the form of Jean Grey. Grey and the Phoenix Force also have a long and troubled history with one another, as seen in 1980's "The Dark Phoenix Saga" by Claremont and John Byrne. The Avengers: 1,000,000 B.C. team was created by Aaron and Esad Ribić and first appeared in 2017's Marvel Legacy #1. The new Avengers: 1,000,000 B.C. series releases in July from Marvel Comics.
