Kakegurui Twin Spinoff Series Coming to Netflix

Kakegurui Twin is getting its own anime series.

Netflix announced the new spinoff show during its "Anime Day" livestream. The new anime is based off of the Kakegurui Twin manga, which was written by series creator Homura Kawamoto with art by Katsura Saiki. The new series will be animated by studio MAPPA, the company that produced both seasons of the main Kakegurui anime, and is also known for its work on shows such Jujutsu Kaisen, the final season of Attack on Titan, and the upcoming anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's award winning Chainsaw Man. The spinoff series focuses on the character of Mary Saotome, who will once again be voiced by Zombie Land Saga actor Minami Tanaka. The first image from the anime series also features the character of Tsuzura Hanatemari, a new character becomes one of Mary's best friends.

Kakegurui Twin is a prequel set one year before the events of the main series, and shows Mary Saotome's first days at the elite Hyakkou Private Academy, a prestigious school where students compete with each other in high risk games of chance. The winners are rewarded with social status and benefits, while the losers are reduced to the status of a "house pet" and are forced to do whatever demeaning demands their classmates make. The spinoff shows how Mary establishes herself at the school and explains the roots of her hatred for the academy's student council. The manga began serialization in 2015 and is still on-going.

The Kakegurui franchise began in 2014 as a manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura. The main series tells the story of Yumeko Jabami, a new student to the academy who immediately shakes up the school's hierarchy with her voracious gambling addiction and her ability to analyze how each game is rigged. The character of Mary is introduced early on in the series as one of Yumeko's first opponents. The manga has been adapted into other media multiple times; in addition to the MAPPA anime series, the manga also served as the basis for a live-action TV series, which also aired for two seasons. Yumeko was portrayed in the live-action series by Minami Hamabe, who is also scheduled to star in Hideaki Anno's upcoming Shin Kamen Rider movie. The series also received a live-action movie, which featured many of the same cast members as the TV series.

Kakegurui Twin will premiere on Netflix in August, 2022. Both the original anime and its live-action counterpart are available to stream on Netflix. The anime will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks, though the physical release will feature a different English dub and translation from the streaming version.
