Jujutsu Kaisen Director Teases New Content for Prequel Movie

Director Sunghoo Park says the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie will feature completely new content.

In a new interview translated by Twitter user @soukatsu_, Park teased that even fans who have read Gege Akutami's original manga will discover new things in the series' upcoming prequel movie. "There may also be some brand new depictions in the movie so that even those who have read the original manga can enjoy themselves to their hearts content," Park said. "I can't give any spoilers, so I encourage everyone to enjoy the movie in cinemas with what we've shared with you so far," Park added.

The prequel movie is set before the events of the TV series, so the show's central protagonist, Yuji Itadori does not appear. Instead, the movie explores the origins of Yuta Okkotsu, who appears as a supporting character throughout the main series, and also fleshes out the backstory of other key characters such as the sorcerer Satoru Gojo and the villainous Geto. Park discussed the various relationships that form the center of Jujutsu Kaisen 0's story. "The highlight of the movie is of course, the story of Okkotsu and Rika as the main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, as well as the relationship between Gojo Saotru and Geto Suguru, which was never depicted in the main anime series."

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will premiere in Japan on Dec. 24. Theater-goers will be given a special booklet when they purchase their tickets, which will include a new chapter of the manga focused on Yuta, as well as commentary from the cast and crew of the movie, including series creator Gege Akutami. An internationally release date for the movie has not yet been announced.

The new movie is based on a manga that was originally entitled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, which was written and drawn by Akutami in 2017. The miniseries was published about a year before Akutami released the first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, and introduced the world and many of the characters that would later return in Akutami's more well-known work. Following the premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen, the miniseries was renamed to reflect its connection to the main series and its place within its timeline.

Jujutsu Kaisen was recently revealed to be the best-selling manga of 2021 in Japan by sales tracker Oricon. In the three years since it premiered, the series has already become one of the best-selling manga series of all time, already surpassing the lifetime circulations of older series such as Haikyuu!! and My Hero Academia. According to the manga's publisher, Shueisha, the series will surpass a circulation of 60 million copies by the end of the year.
