Venture ‘Into The Dark’ with JEANIE [Q&A]

In less than two weeks, JEANIE‘s Into The Dark tour will propel her to EDC Las Vegas‘ BassPOD stage. It’s a fitting locale for her bass-heavy, arena-sized sound, to say the least.

Since early March, the DJ/producer has been traveling stateside, making noise on her debut North American headline tour. The 17-date effort spans a robust variety of venues: theaters, lounges, clubs, and festivals.

“It’s hard to choose a favorite, but so far, my favorite city has been Tampa [Florida] at The Ritz. The venue, crowd, and crew there are always unmatched,” JEANIE tells Dancing Astronaut while en route to tend the decks at this year’s now-concluded iteration of Excision’s Paradise Blue destination festival. “I really think [Tampa] should be considered one of the bass capitals of the United States!”

EDC Vegas is next on the Into The Dark tour’s hit list; like the live initiative, it is a benchmark in JEANIE’s career. And while the Sin City booking adds impact to her festival portfolio (which, in 2023, expanded to include Tomorrowland and Lost Lands, among others), so will her slot at Beyond Wonderland later this June.

Altogether, the tour and its festival performances are powerful signifiers of the appetite for JEANIE’s music. This is no surprise, considering the caliber of labels on which she’s released (Bassrush, Circus Records, Space Yacht, and Disciple Round Table, to name just a few), and the throttling, made-for-the-live-circuit sound that she so compellingly brings to stages both nationwide and internationally.

From her deserved position in dance/electronic’s limelight, JEANIE talks Into The Dark and its supporting tour with Dancing Astronaut. The full Q&A appears below, along with a host of stops still to come.

What is the concept behind Into The Dark and what does this project signify about your sound?

JEANIE: “The EP was born out of a really difficult time for me—there were many days when I considered giving up on the JEANIE project entirely. While it might have been hard to tell from an outside perspective, I felt incredibly lost and burnt out. Once I started to channel that energy into my music, it gave me a new perspective on embracing those confusing periods, hence Into The Dark. This EP restored my love for music production and I don’t think it could have come at a more perfect time.”

You’ve called this EP “your favorite work to date.” What about it causes to rise to the level of “favorite work” for you?

JEANIE: “There have been some releases I’ve worked on throughout the past couple of years that I realized I didn’t feel super connected to in the end. These tracks [from Into The Dark] feel like 100% me. Not only are they the strongest tracks I’ve created production-wise in my opinion, but it just feels like a completely cohesive and natural project overall. I didn’t have to force any of the tracks to work together, which isn’t always the case, and I feel extremely proud of every single one.”

Congratulations on your debut North American headline tour! Could you tell us about your vision for this tour and why right now is the right time to realize this milestone?

JEANIE: “Thank you! This tour has been a long time coming, but after touring pretty regularly the past few years, I finally wanted to do something of my own, and it just felt like the right time. It doesn’t always feel like you can give people the full experience at a show that isn’t your own, so I’m excited to finally be able to show people what a JEANIE show is all about. I have been putting more work than ever into my music and sets throughout the past few years, and this tour feels like the culmination of all of that hard work finally coming to life.”

How has the tour been going?

JEANIE: “The tour has been incredible! It’s been really cool to see a lot of fans, both old and new, in cities all across the US. The most rewarding thing so far has been to see fans coming to multiple tour stops—to know that someone is willing to travel far to see you, especially more than once, is mind blowing. I’ve also been blessed to be joined by Green Matter and TINYKVT on select stops, who are not only extremely talented artists, but amazing people as well.”
