DC’s Dark Crisis Pits the Flash Against a Major Batman Foe After the Justice League’s Death

Artwork released for DC Comics' upcoming Dark Crisis event shows the Flash tangling with Clayface.

The new pages do not include any text, but show the Batman villain infiltrating the Hall of Justice disguised as a tour group leader. Along that tour, readers catch glimpses of the Hall's various displays, including the various iterations of the Justice League from over decades, the team's new memorial statues and what appears to be the battle where the team will meet its untimely end. Clayface reveals himself once he spots a Mother Box on display, but is stopped by Wally West before he can get away with it.

It is unclear why Clayface would be after a Mother Box, which is a living computer that possesses many abilities, including opening up Boom-Tube portals. One possibility is that Clayface will become one of Deathstroke Inc.'s new members by the time Dark Crisis begins, and that it is not Clayface after the Mother Box but the organization. Deathstroke Inc. formed after Slade Wilson seized control over a society of supervillains, which is teased to be involved in the upcoming summer event as well in early promotional art.

Wally West/The Flash, on the other hand, will have his own mission during the crisis. A tie-in arc to the event for The Flash ongoing series is titled "The Search for Barry Allen," Wally's mentor and the most recognizable scarlet speedster for DC Comics. Barry has been missing since the finale of 2021's Infinite Frontier miniseries, where he was seemingly killed and/or sent to a dream-like reality by Pariah.

Dark Crisis will spin out of Justice League #75, "The Death of the Justice League." As previously mentioned, the League is set to die in April, with nine major heroes among the issue's casualties. The book arrives 30 years after The Death of Superman crossover arrived from DC Comics and is set to force DC's legacy characters to handle Dark Crisis on their own. However, just what exactly heroes like Wally West, Jon Kent/Superman and Yara Flor/Wonder Girl will be up against remains to be seen.
