Boruto: What’s Next for Kara After [SPOILER]’s Death?

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter #55, “Legacy,” of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

The last chapter of Boruto had some revelations that more than flipped the entire status quo on its head, especially when it comes to the series' villains. With Naruto losing Kurama and Sasuke's Rinnegan being taken out of commission, despite his death, Isshiki Ōtsutsuki has left his mark of chaos on the free shinobi world.

But it's also about legacy for the villain, as he's imparted a White Karma mark on Code, seemingly hoping the Kara terrorist cell carries on. With that in mind, let's look at what could happen to the organization now that the boss is dead.

Isshiki left Code the mark to avenge him and complete the God Tree plan. Code, of course, jumped at the offer as he revered Isshiki deeply. Once the mark manifests, he'll have the powers of an Ōtsutsuki, so he can go after Boruto or Kawaki and feed them to the tree to create a chakra fruit. This will allow Code to decimate the planet and move on to another, becoming the god Isshiki couldn't.

Now, while he will have the power to retaliate on his own, he's also seen that there's strength in numbers. Kara was filled with traitors like Amado and Koji Kashin, but if Code can get proper soldiers like Delta and Boro, he'll have the army he needs -- and Kara desperately needs the revamp. We don't know what other disciples Isshiki left behind, so Code may have more allies than he thinks. The only question is whether he'll have the maturity to lead them, especially considering his ego issues.

Code could actually pull leading Kara off, though, as he desperately wants vengeance for his master. All he's ever wanted are loyal colleagues and that sense of family, so if he can get that, he could turn Kara into something similar to Orochimaru's Taka, with loyalists ready to die for him and his new mission of godhood with the Ten-Tails.

Kara Becomes Amado's Rouge Science Division

When Naruto and co. returned to Konoha, Amado was less than ecstatic -- in fact, he began to act a bit sketchily. With everyone's guard down and Konoha distracted, he could return to take Kara over. He has all the intel on the remaining soldiers, the experimental vessels (both those failed and in stasis) and other operatives, as well, like the Outer Members.

Amado didn't want Isshiki to end the world, but to have signed up in the first place he must have thought there was a purpose to the disorder. Shikamaru and Boruto never trusted him, so having Amado make a play for control would be fitting, as the character never justified why he wanted to betray his boss. Amado's Kara could be a new Akatsuki, and the fact he's inside Konoha means he could also be secretly stealing the village's secrets. Amado's always been obsessed with science, so he could evolve Kara into something more progressive. Isshiki was never going to give Amado true power, and the way he's always pushing to get rid of Kawaki strongly suggests that his heart isn't entirely in the right place.

Given that Kawaki's still a weapon of mass destruction and Boruto has Momoshiki inside him, Amado would feel like he has just reason to create a response unit. He's always kept his cards close to his chest, so he's unpredictable, but the fact he engineered all Kara's soldiers, fitting them with cybernetics and such, rather than inform Konoha early on about Isshiki's intentions means he's always going to be hard to trust.

At first, it seemed that Koji didn't care about leading or the world in general, but the fact he fought to save it by turning on Isshiki says a lot. He seems to be a soldier who wants peace and, after fighting with Isshiki, Koji could return to repurpose Kara. He barely escaped with his life after fighting the boss, but what's interesting is that, if he wanted, he could make Kara a force for good and stand against Code. It'd be fitting, as he's a Jiraiya clone and Jiraiya's teachings led to the Akatsuki years ago. However, if Koji still thinks Konoha and the lot aren't the key to lasting peace, he could run Kara as an anti-heroic terrorist unit. After all, he's proven that the ninja world isn't as free as everyone thinks and there are dire threats out there so, while everyone's into diplomacy, Koji could be about action.

The fact Amado didn't let him know he was just a pawn to bring Isshiki out of Jigen's body means he has reason to distrust the current Kara, so Koji might even recruit new allies. Soldiers would gravitate to him the way Ao did, plus there's the possibility he and Amado might put their differences aside and reunite to restart the unit outside of Isshiki's vision.

But what's for certain is that Naruto and Boruto do want to reach out, which means there's always the chance Kara can be redeemed as well. The group could even become a roving force like the Rangers, given Koji's similarities to Sasuke. Still, it'll take a lot of convincing, as Koji's ways led to Ao and Mugino dying, but allying with Konoha could help him unlock more of his past and rediscover what Jiraiya wanted when he taught Nagato and co. about being freedom fighters.
