Yashahime Finally Reveals What Happened to Rin

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 27 of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, "The Silver-Scale Curse," now streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, Animelab and Hulu.

As its hit sequel, Yashahime has offered several teasers and glimpses into the lives of the original cast of Inuyasha. One of the show's greatest mysteries is what happened to Rin after she married Sesshōmaru and gave birth to their half-demon twin daughters, which caused her to float unconsciously in the Tree of Ages since the series began. After an entire season full of anticipation and fan theories, Yashahime Season 2 finally answers the fandom's biggest question.

Episode 27 of Yashahime begins with Sesshōmaru and Jaken visiting the unconscious Rin in the Tree of Ages while Sesshōmaru announces that his daughters are looking for Bokusen-Oh. While Jaken is saddened by the current state of Lord Sesshōmaru's family, he reminisces about the events that placed them in this unfortunate situation in the first place. In a revealing flashback, Rin is visited by Zero on the night of the Grim Comet when she was praying for her daughters' safety. Zero tells Rin she hates humans and half-demons because they'll eventually cause Kirinmaru's demise.

Zero casts the Silver-Scale Curse onto Rin right before Sesshōmaru and Jaken show up to rescue her. This unique curse causes the host to grow ugly scales that eventually rot away a human's body until they die. In Sesshōmaru's rage after arriving too late, he aims to kill Zero but is forced to stop when she informs him that her and Rin's lives are tied together by a common string of fate. This creates a burdensome paradox where the only way to lift the curse is to kill Zero, but if she were to die, so would Rin. Zero uses this upper hand to leverage a deal with Sesshōmaru to lift the curse and save Rin -- but only if he tells her where their half-demon daughters are so she can kill them.

While Jaken is quick to reveal the twins' location in order to save Rin, she stops him midsentence to prevent Zero from going after her daughters. In a desperate attempt to protect her children, Rin grabs Sesshōmaru's sword and asks him to kill her instead because she loves their children more than anything. When Zero leaves to give them time to consider her ultimatum, Rin passes out from the curse. With the curse moving quickly through her body and no other option available, Jaken suggests that they seal her in the Tree of Ages.

Despite being safely sealed away, Rin's curse continues to progress until Jaken is told they must freeze Rin's time permanently to stop the curse from killing her. The Tree of Ages tells Jaken to use the Butterfly chrysalis to bring dreams to Rin so she remains asleep and dreaming. However, the Butterfly must be attached to someone close to Rin in order to work, and Jaken has no choice but to place it on Setsuna. This Butterfly Curse prevents Setsuna from being able to sleep or dream herself so that her mother can survive by being frozen in time.

Given the past events endured by the cast, Sesshōmaru's actions to protect his family become clearer after several shocking events, like resurrecting Zero to save Rin. With the secrets of the past finally revealed, viewers can look forward to seeing the family overcome their unfortunate circumstances in the hopes they will be reunited. The major flashback provided in Episode 27 currently has fans buzzing online after exposing Yashahime's greatest mysteries.
