A trailer for the upcoming anime film Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop has dropped.
Created to commemorate the tenth anniversary of anime music label and production company FlyingDog (Samurai Champloo, The Ancient Magus' Bride, Carole and Tuesday), Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is an original anime film directed by Kyohei Ishiguro. Set to "YAMAZAKURA" ("Mountain Cherry") by singer Reiko Ohnuki, the teaser offers a glimpse of the film's emotional and nostalgic story of a short but magical summer shared between Cherry, a shy boy obsessed with haiku, and Smile, a friendly yet insecure girl who wears a mask to hide her braces. The film will release in Japanese theatres on July 22 and will stream internationally on Netflix the very same day.
Director Kyohei Ishiguro has previously worked as an episode director on popular anime like Fairy Tail, My Little Monster and Psycho-Pass and has been the primary director for anime like Occultic;Nine, Children of the Whales and the critically acclaimed Your Lie in April. He is also currently directing the anime adaptation of the Netflix film Bright. Joining Ishiguro is Dai Satou, who will pen the film's script. Satou has previously written scripts for episodes of Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, served as the chief writer for Ergo Proxy, was one of three main writers on Eureka Seven and was also a lead writer for the cult classic Wolf's Rain.
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is being produced by anime studios Signal.MD (FLCL Progressive, Napping Princess, Recovery of an MMO Junkie) and Sublimation (Dragon's Dogma, Shikizakura) and will feature character designs by Yukiko Aikyou, who has designed characters for anime Your Lie in April and Accel World. Yukiko Watabe (Akame ga Kill!, Hanasaku Iroha the Movie: Home Sweet Home) will act as animation director, and Kensuke Ushio, who has composed soundtracks for Space Dandy, A Silent Voice, Devilman: Crybaby and the upcoming anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man, will write the film's score.
The film will star newcomer Somegorou Ichikawa and Hana Sugisaki as protagonists Cherry and Smile respectively. Sugisaki previously starred as Mary in the Studio Ghibli-inspired film Mary and the Witch's Flower. Megumi Han (Devilman: Crybaby, Hunter x Hunter, Little Witch Academia) will join the supporting cast in an undisclosed role. Although there have been no confirmed cast members yet, Netflix is producing an English dub of the film, and a brief teaser of the film with English audio is currently on the streaming service.
Directed by Kyohei Ishiguro and written by Dai Satou, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop stars Somegorou Ichikawa and Hana Sugisaki and is scheduled to release in Japanese theatres and on Netflix July 22.
