Welcome to Demon School!: Iruma’s New Teacher Could Be His Biggest Ally

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, Episodes 9-10, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Season 2 of Welcome to Demon School! has already introduced some fun new characters to the supernatural school's roster, including Ali-san, Iruma's guardian demon, the obnoxiously hilarious Romiere Ronove and Ameri's stalker Elicos Schenell, who ended up joining human protagonist Iruma's Magical Apparatus Battler in Episode 9. But the introduction of Balam-sensei, Iruma's new teacher, is arguably the most important introduction of this season so far.

After the "Evil Iruma" arc, the students of the Misfit Class are immediately thrown into their final exam period, which is right before their summer vacation, also called the end-of-terminus exam. Surprisingly, studying is something that Iruma is terrible at, and even though Asmodeus is there to help, he can only do so much when he doesn't know that Iruma is a human and knows nothing about the netherworld.

But one thing Iruma does know is humans and the human world -- or what the demons call "imaginary beasts" -- which are part of netherworld history. Iruma easily answers all the questions, being just common sense for him, and gets a perfect score.

Iruma then gets a 'study high' from nailing the study of mythical zoology and learns more about netherworld's history. The professor of netherworld history just so happened to be on leave due to his evil cycle and Balam Shichiro, the person who wrote the mythical zoology textbook, just so happens to be substituting.

Balam has a bad reputation at the school because of his strange behavior. He loves to trap people in tentacles and caress them while lecturing, and he's also rumored to often experiment on unsuspecting students. As a result, most students run away when they hear he is teaching a class.

When Iruma goes to Balam's class, he touches Iruma and discovers that Iruma has no wings. So, he rushes Iruma to the office to check his health, but Ali-san generates some fake wings just in time to evade suspicion. Balam apologizes to Iruma for exposing his tiny wings, and in return, he shows Iruma his own fangs, which he usually hides with a mask.

Balam's appearance often scares others, and this is why they often misconceive his intentions as evil. In reality, he's a gentle giant that loves all creatures and wants to be close to them. Additionally, he is a huge fan of humans -- admiring human's resilience given their general weak physique compared to demons, and is curious about how they can survive in the world.

After witnessing Balam's kindness, Iruma reveals that he is, in fact, a human. Balam is shocked by this revelation but is even more nervous, having only been imagined what humans look like until now. The fact that Iruma exists confirms a lot of his previous theories about them. He also becomes incredibly protective of Iruma, since he is technically a rare protective species in the netherworld, so Iruma can definitely feel safe around him.

Balam's position as a teacher at Babyls also benefits Iruma. He is a great educator who is able to explain complex concepts about demons and magic, using simple words and pictures, which could become key to Iruma's educational improvement.

Balam is not the only demon that knows about Iruma's real identity -- his grandfather, Opera, and Ali-san are all in on the scheme. But Balam is unique in Welcome to Demon School! in how much he loves and knows about humans. His knowledge can go a long way in helping hide Iruma's human status from the demon world should he ever in danger of exposure.
