unOrdinary: How Does John’s Supernatural Ability Work – & Does It Have Limits?

Set in a world where almost everybody possesses a supernatural ability, unOrdinary features a huge variety of superpowers. The most interesting and perhaps strongest of them all is John's power to copy. Despite his potential to easily plow through the social hierarchy in Wellston, John has kept his ability under the rug for most of the webtoon series so far. He's afraid of repeating the same mistakes he made in the past and hurting those precious to him -- which did eventually happen.

John spent a good part of his childhood being powerless but always wished to awaken his own ability. When Claire, John's former best friend and classmate, had a premonition of him finally using a power, he initially didn't believe her due to the vision's absurdity -- but his tone immediately changed when her foresight turned to reality. Claire helped John master his ability through her visions, which also helped him conquer New Bostin.

As he's exhibited on various occasions, John's ability focuses on copying other people's powers. However, it is later revealed that John's isn't a mere imitation; it's actually aura manipulation. To fully understand how John's ability works, it's crucial to know how powers in unOrdinary manifest.

The energy that fuels these supernatural abilities is called aura, similar to chakra in Naruto and ki in Dragon Ball. When a person uses their ability, energy flows through their aura channels, which regulates the aura. The greater the flow, the stronger the ability will be. John's ability relies on perceiving this aura flow and copying it.

This copy ability allows John to see other people's aura flow, which is how he caught wind of Terrence stalking Seraphina. By replicating the same aura flow, he is able to manifest the same ability. He could only produce a copy of others' abilities after he awakened his power, but his output increased as his mastery and understanding of aura and abilities continued to grow. John eventually managed to tweak and improve the abilities he copied -- a feat the original holders were yet to pull off -- and even used them in combination with each other.

While John's ability seems overpowered at face value, it does have weaknesses. He can only copy four abilities at once, at least for now, and the original ability holder must be within his perception range for him to copy their ability. He also can't copy certain powers, such as Claire's Clairvoyance and Juni's Flash Forward.

John's power is easily one of the strongest in unOrdinary, and it allows him to covet the title of King twice. However, he isn't born with complete mastery over it yet. He must continually study to further his grasp over it, and it's still uncertain whether or not he can no longer optimize it. That being said, there's a good chance fans of the webtoon will see him come up with a stronger version of his power, especially since he may require it to protect Seraphina from the two dodgy organizations.
