Undead Andy: Could Shonen Manga’s ‘Deadpool’ Take Down Marvel’s Merc?

How do you kill the unkillable Merc with a Mouth? How about with another unkillable merc? That's what one of Weekly Shonen Jump’s newest additions, Undead Unluck, presents us with in the form of Undead Andy. The character bears more than a passing resemblance to Marvel’s Deadpool, who is also essentially immortal with an accelerated healing factor, wields a katana, and used to work as a mercenary.

So, let's compare the comic characters' powers and personalities to see if either of them could get the edge over the other.

Which Healing Factor Is More Powerful?

Both Deadpool and Andy have been through all manner of deaths, from being shot, cut in half or decapitated, to being blown up into pieces, or even being liquefied in Deadpool’s case. Both have survived all these ordeals with ease and both can live for dozens if not hundreds of years, so they are basically immortal.

The main difference between the two where healing and long life are concerned seems to be the speed of their regeneration. Andy’s healing speed is so fast that he deliberately uses it as a weapon to shoot off his old body parts (fingers, head, forearms, etc.,) like a bullet -- a move he calls “parts bullet.” This move is so powerful that it has already killed several very strong enemies throughout the manga series. This proves that Andy’s healing speed can match that of a gunshot, or may even be faster. Andy probably also has a higher level of pain tolerance than Deadpool due to the types of skills he tends to use.

On the other hand (no pun intended), while Deadpool can also restore himself from being reduced to practically nothing, he has never demonstrated the type of healing speed that can match that of Andy’s. In his first movie, it took him several hours to grow his hand back. It is worth mentioning, however, that Deadpool’s healing factor has to constantly battle his growing cancer, so his healing speed may be affected by that. No one in the Marvel Universe has ever used their healing factor in the same way that Andy does, so it is safe to assume that all Marvel characters’ healing speeds would be slower than that of Andy’s.

Is Deadpool or Andy the Stronger Fighter?

Deadpool is known as “the Merc with a Mouth” so his experience as a deadly mercenary is incredibly important to his fighting skills. Over the years, Deadpool has demonstrated his proficiency in many different types of martial arts including Taekwon-Do, Jujutsu and Savate, among others. And he is an expert swordsman and marksman to boot. He also has superhuman speed and reflexes due to his healing factor, and his fighting style is so unpredictable that even Taskmaster can’t copy his moves.

Comparatively, Andy has less of an edge in terms of technical skills. His most powerful moves all seem to derive from his super speedy healing factor, including his “parts bullet” and what’s called a “repair boost,” where he draws his sword from within his body and uses his healing speed to boost the speed of the sword draw, so it is considered a type of super-powered taijutsu. By comparison, Andy’s techniques are fairly easy to predict and dodge for skilled or superpowered opponents, as demonstrated in the Unrepair arc.

However, when Andy pulls out the card in his forehead, he will gain back all his past memories and experiences as a fighter -- becoming a Super Saiyan-like character named Victor. At this point, it's likely that no one would be able to take him down. Oh, and Andy has an indestructible sword, which could come in handy during a sword fight.

Who Is More Reckless - Deadpool or Andy?

Due to their healing abilities, both Deadpool and Andy are very reckless. They are able to take great risks during a fight in order to gain an advantage over their opponents. Andy is even actively trying to commit suicide so he's always trying to find new ways to die.

Deadpool and Andy also share some mental health issues. Deadpool’s mental instability can be attributed to his accelerated healing factor causing overly active brain neurons firing around. But Andy’s problem is due to the card on his forehead that blocks some of his memories and his more vicious personality.

Despite both being very funny characters, Deadpool’s ability to break the fourth wall, and make references to all things pop culture, is still unrivaled by anyone in comics. Andy can sometimes make funny references to common tropes, but he is far less self-aware than Deadpool. In fact, he is so un-self-aware, that he often appears naked in front of girls without noticing, so he could be caught off guard by Wade Wilson's quick wits.

Ultimately, could Andy take down Deadpool? The answer is... it's complicated. Though Andy's faster healing and Super Saiyan form certainly give him the edge, his victory would be shortlived because both Deadpool and Andy are, as far as we know, unkillable and immortal. The only imaginable outcome is that it will be a fight that lasts a very, very, very, long time, with lots of quips to keep us entertained along the way.
