TONIKAWA: Tsukasa Finds Joy in the Little Things

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 10 of TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Nasa Yuzaki was nearly killed when he ran afoul of a truck one night, and it was only thanks to Tsukasa's heroic act (and seemingly superhuman endurance) that Nasa survived. Remarkably, Tsukasa wants very little in return for her heroic act, aside from Nasa's pledge of love every day during their brand-new marriage.

It's been a busy marriage so far, and Nasa has had to face not only Tsukasa's antagonistic foster sister Chitose, but he also braved a trip to Nara Prefecture so Tsukasa could meet her parents-in-law. Once Nasa returns home, he finds it burned to the ground. What is he to do?

A Humble Home

Nasa and Tsukasa were getting ready to build the ultimate household when disaster struck, and the entire apartment burned to the ground while Nasa and Tsukasa were visiting the Yuzakis in Nara Prefecture. Now, they need a new place to stay for the time being. Nasa's old friend Kaname Arisugawa graciously welcomed the newlyweds into a guest house on the bathhouse premises. It's not much, but Tsukasa is delighted, even if Mr. Arisugawa's cluttered junk is everywhere. Tsukasa won't breathe a word of complaint and is already back in homemaker mode. She cooks for her husband not out of duty, but for fun, and she finds it immensely rewarding to see what Nasa thinks of her concoctions. Tsukasa surprises Nasa with some fried pork, and Nasa can hardly believe that Tsukasa whipped this up out of nowhere. The perfect dessert arrives when Kaname visits and drops off a fancy melon, which Nasa and Tsukasa find absolutely delicious.

Tsukasa may have spent a few awkward nights with Nasa at first, but she's rapidly figuring out the rhythm of their marriage. Nasa is now following Tsukasa's lead and not the other way around. Her humility and grace sets a good example for Nasa, who sometimes gets ahead of himself with his tireless calculations and ambitious plans. It's commendable that Nasa is so responsible and well-prepared, but still, he could afford to relax and enjoy what he's got, and Tsukasa shows him how it's done. She follows Nasa to an apartment model display and savors the bathtub there, picturing herself soaking in it, and she's not the least bit upset when Nasa realizes that they went to the wrong place by mistake. So what if the new apartment won't be fancy? Tsukasa is happy to live with Nasa anywhere.

Tsukasa Branches Out

The next morning, Tsukasa is in the mood to earn her keep, even if Kaname didn't ask her to. Bright and early, Tsukasa meets up with Kaname, who is already up and getting ready to clean up the bathhouse and get it ready for another day of business. Both girls get to work, and Kaname shows off how many gadgets and appliances Nasa has set up for the bathhouse the chore load. Still, some more work is needed, and Tsukasa is eager to get it done. Nasa has done a lot of good, but he can be a bit intense and restless at times, so Tsukasa acts as the perfect foil by appreciating the little things and having fun with some humble hard work. Not everything revolves around spreadsheets and high-tech cleaning bots -- there has to be some human humility and dignity involved too.

The day wraps up with a late evening walk to the grocery store. Egged on by Mrs. Arisugawa, Nasa steers Tsukasa into a lonely park on the way to the store for privacy. Tsukasa is charmed by the idea, but she's feeling a bit bashful, and she'd rather not kiss her husband right now. Still, the newlyweds have a lovely moment together by the shore of the park's pond, and Nasa is amazed at how warm and soft Tsukasa is when he hugs her. Tsukasa remarks that she is still learning all kinds of warm, fuzzy emotions from her marriage, and she can't wait to explore them all. That's what love is all about.
