Tokyo Revengers: Toman Remembers Its Origins and a Fallen Member

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Tokyo Revengers Episode 22, "One for all," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Toman was introduced in Tokyo Revengers as a ruthless gang with a penchant for heinous crimes. Of course, we now know that Kisaki was responsible for the gang's corruption and downfall and also had a hand in Mikey's eventual downward spiral. What Toman stands for currently is based on the values set by its six founders, Mikey, Draken, Mitsuya, Pah-chin, Baji and Kazutora -- one for all and all for one. Draken is widely regarded as the heart of Toman but, after his sacrifice in Episode 21, it may actually be Baji.

Episode 22 begins with a flashback to Toman's early days. Before they were ever called Toman, they were just six friends who rode their motorcycles all day, except for Mikey who would usually hitch a ride with one of his friends. They all meet at Musashi shrine with Baji carrying a sleeping Mikey on his back. When he wakes up, Mikey declares that the six of them will take on the gang that Kazutora has been fighting by himself: the Black Dragons, a formidable gang that's three years their senior.

But Baji has a brilliant idea: they'll start a gang of their own to take on the Black Dragons. Mikey will be the commander, Draken the vice commander, Mitsuya the guard and Pah-chin will be the flag bearer while Baji and Kazutora will make up the attack unit. Mikey even comes up with a name, though his friends poke fun at it: Tokyo Manjiro Gang, named after himself. Baji wants a gang that will risk it all to protect each other when one of them gets hurt. "We're giving all of ourselves to you," Baji tells Mikey. "Create this new age." To commemorate this day, the six of them pool their change to buy a single omamori that they entrust to Baji, a charm that he carried everywhere since that day.

Chifuyu is incredibly loyal to Baji since he met him when he was just 12 years old. Their first meeting was unconventional: Chifuyu thought that he was going to put a delinquent in his place but he was met with a bespectacled, slicked-hair Baji, looking the picture of a model nerd. The two became acquaintances after Chifuyu helped Baji write a letter to Kazutora in juvie. It wasn't until Baji singlehandedly saved him that Chifuyu became Baji's friend and follower. Baji is Toman: he'll do everything to protect those who are hurt.

Mikey apologizes to Baji for failing to help keep Toman's promise. Almost everyone disperses as soon as they hear the police sirens -- except Kazutora. In the wake of Baji's sacrifice, Kazutora decides to stay with him and stop running from his mistakes. He knows that he can't ask for Mikey's forgiveness, but he bows to him in deep apology.

The police arrest Kazutora. It'll be at least 10 years before he's released. Draken and Takemichi visit him and Kazutora tells them that he plans to make amends. Draken sees through his words and warns him not to commit suicide -- it won't do anything but dishonor Baji's sacrifice. Draken leaves Kazutora with a message from Mikey: now and always, Kazutora is part of Toman and he forgives him.

But, in reality, Mikey is likely lying. How could he forgive Kazutora after everything he's done? That's why Mikey couldn't visit him in jail-- it would hurt too much. But Mikey loved Baji and chose to forgive Kazutor to honor the memory of a friend who died to stop Mikey from going down a dark path.

All of Toman is in the omamori. From Baji to Takemichi, the omamori -- Toman -- is now in Takemichi's hands. Before Baji died, he entrusted Toman and his friends to Takemichi. He loved them more than anything and was willing to die for them, and he saw something in Takemichi that told him he could trust Takemichi to protect them.
