The Detective Is Already Dead’s Newest Character May Be Darker Than She Seems

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 3 of The Detective Is Already Dead, "That's Yui-nya Quality," now streaming on Funimation.

The Detective Is Already Dead Episode 3 formally introduces its newest main cast member, Yui Saikawa, a 14-year-old idol and the sole survivor of a wealthy family. Picking up from Episode 2's finale, Yui hires Kimihiko and Nagisa to guard a family heirloom in her mansion known as the "Miracle Sapphire" on the day she is set to do a live performance.

At the persuasion of his new companion, Nagisa, Kimihiko takes on the case but notices right away that something feels off about it. By the episode's conclusion, Kimihiko suspects Yui is hiding a dark secret, effectively teasing the storyline for Episode 4.

Episode 3 of The Detective Is Already Dead drops hints throughout that immediately make Kimihiko question the nature of his case and Yui's actual motives. One of these comes during his formal meeting with Yui at her mansion -- she wears an eyepatch on her left eye. When he asks if her eye was injured, Yui somewhat playfully responds that it's a "playing a character" kind of thing and that idols "have a tough struggle to survive too." Kimihiko doesn't know what this means, but the way the conversation plays out from there doesn't give him much confidence in Yui.

Next is the revelation that Yui received a mysterious note from an anonymous criminal informing her of a planned robbery. The criminal even detailed they plan to break into her mansion -- on the day she’s set to do a live concert -- and steal her ¥2 billion Miracle Sapphire. This action is understandably suspicious to Kimihiko because no criminal worth their salt would inform their would-be victim of the crime they plan to commit, especially not in detail.

The suspicious note causes Kimihiko to make further inquiries. Why hasn't Yui tightened security at her mansion if she knows the day and time the robbery is set to take place? Her response makes even less sense as she claims her security guards are not interested in protecting her family heirloom, only attending her live performances as fans. Kimihiko naturally finds himself in disbelief that Yui would even hire such low-rate security guards, but her strange behavior only gets worse from here.

After being persuaded by Nagisa to accept Yui's case, Kimihiko makes two final inquiries. First, he asks why Yui hasn’t thought of going to the police as a preventative measure if security at her mansion is stupidly lax. Yui explains the police couldn’t be bothered to look into her case with only a threatening note to go by, which again makes no sense. She then turns the tables on Kimihiko by "predicting" his thoughts about bribing the police with money to motivate them into action. Almost as if to disrupt his chain of thought, Yui dismisses his logic with "only a pervert thinks this way," which becomes her recurring gag for him.

The final inquiry is on the whereabouts of Yui's parents. Yui says they died three years prior, happily announcing she is the head of the Saikawa household. That alone is pretty suspicious as parents' deaths are typically a traumatic experience for children. Yui's inappropriate response to their tragic passing doesn't go unnoticed by Kimihiko, especially when she talks about her rivals.

When sharing her thoughts on her competition, Yui disturbingly states she "hears" they all "vanish from center stage the next day" while holding and pointing a gun at Kimihiko. This frightens Kimihiko a little, though she clarifies it’s "only a joke." He’s not sold, of course, as he is not able to tell when she’s joking or being serious. Chillingly, Yui admits to finding his reactions to her jokes amusing.

Following this disturbing first meeting, Kimihiko has some insight into Yui's strange situation and especially her personality. Absolutely nothing adds up, and understandably so. When he and Nagisa attend Yui’s rehearsal the day before she's set to perform, he shares his thoughts about the 14-year-old idol with his companion. Specifically, he believes Yui is hiding a dark secret that will be revealed in the main hook of her song "Sapphire Phantasm." Kimihiko's suspicions are further validated when he witnesses an attempted kidnapping, effectively setting up The Detective Is Already Dead Episode 4.
