The Detective Is Already Dead Exposes the Impact of Siesta’s Deadly Legacy

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 10 of The Detective Is Already Dead, "So I Can't Become a Detective," now streaming on Funimation.

After the Flashback story arc's heartbreaking conclusion in Episode 9, The Detective Is Already Dead Episode 10 returns to the present timeline to catch up with Kimihiko Kimizuka, Nagisa Natsunagi and Yui Saikawa. After resolving Yui's case that nearly resulted in the loss of her prosthetic left eye, the trio decides to honor Siesta’s legacy by continuing the fight against SPES. When they unexpectedly encounter Charlotte Arisaka Anderson (aka Charl) on a cruise ship, they quickly learn the impact Siesta’s death had on everyone close to her.

Of Siesta's original team, Charl was perhaps hit hardest by the former's death. As the person who loved Siesta the most, Charl lamented she was never Siesta's "chosen one" and resented Kimihiko for the love and attention he got from her "Ma'am" (or "Mom" in the Funimation subtitles). Despite what Siesta wished for both herself and Kimihiko, Charl took it upon herself to continue Siesta’s work alone.

When Charl accidentally runs into Kimihiko and meets his new female companions, she is none too pleased to learn Nagisa decided to take up Siesta’s title of "legendary detective" without having earned it. While Charl does not appear to have linked Nagisa with Hel, she sees her as an impostor all the same and refuses to work alongside her and Kimihiko's new team. When speaking to Kimihiko alone, she informs him "Siesta's legacy" is present on the ship and that they need to find it before SPES does.

Despite being new to the game, Nagisa herself also feels the weight of Siesta’s legacy on her shoulders. Not only does she encounter Siesta in her dreams and argue with her, but she similarly does not believe she's earned her place as Siesta’s successor. Prior to inheriting Siesta's heart (via her villainous alter ego), Nagisa remembers always being "caged up" in a dark room and bound to a bed. These memories appear to be similar to those of Alicia, who also remembers "always being locked away in a dark place," seemingly confirming Nagisa, Alicia, and Hel are all different personalities existing in one body.

By being completely unaware of her Dissociative Identity Disorder, Nagisa is also oblivious of her own link to SPES and that she may be the "legacy of Siesta" SPES is actually looking for. This wouldn't be the first time Chameleon comes looking for her, as he also hunted her down when she was Alicia in London a year prior. As the current owner of Siesta's heart and an alter ego of Hel, Nagisa is invaluable to SPES as she has the two things SEED wants to fulfill his own villainous mission on Earth.

With only two episodes left of Season 1, The Detective Is Already Dead is setting up to end big with major revelations that will surely set up for Season 2. With Kimihiko edging closer to learning the truth of Nagisa's Dissociative Identity Disorder and the full details of the events that led to Siesta's death, he'll have to make a major decision about his own future and how much of it will be dictated by his place in Siesta's legacy.
