The Day I Became a God: A Small Victory for Yota Turns Out Less Than Sweet

WARNING: the following contains spoilers for Episode 4 of The Day I Became a God, now streaming on FUNimation.

The girl calling herself Odin Sato (real name: Hina) claims to be an envoy from the mystic realm of Asgard, here to warn humanity that the world will end in 30 days' time. She seems to have a supernatural gift for predicting the future, too, which she's using to help a certain Yota Narukami impress the girl of his dreams. Eventually.

For now, Odin is having fun trying to help Yota out, and she's taken a liking to the Narukami household. And now, Odin thinks she's found yet another way to make Yota happy, but the outcome ends up being totally different than even she could expect.

Odin claims to know everything, but she might not know about the genius computer hacker named Mr. Suzuki, who is on a mission to discover the truth behind Dr. Asama's and Shuichiro Korogi's research on advanced computer algorithms. It seems that Mr. Korogi is trying to figure out the mysteries of love with the computing power of machines, and a lawyer named Kako Tengan is happy to interview Dr. Asama to get some insights. It could be that Odin's apparent magical powers are actually based on this advanced computer research. The mystery deepens.

Meanwhile, Odin is at the Narukami household, using computers for a very different (and more fun) reason: entering Mahjong tournaments under Yota's name and winning them. Already, Odin had spotted Yota fawning over the gorgeous Kako Tengan on TV, who has a sharp wardrobe to match her sharp mind. Why not give Yota a chance to meet this amazing woman? The upcoming Libertas Cup, a Mahjong tournament, should be the key, and Yota is ready to enter.

Yota may be a total novice at Mahjong, but Odin gave him a rundown of the rules, and forbade him from looking up advanced strategies on his own. Instead, Yota attends the four-man tournament with Odin's own advice in mind, and he's even dressed to the nines in one of his father's borrowed suits. In the small audience, Odin, Ashura (Yota's friend) and Kyoko Izanami are watching, and they can hardly believe what they're seeing. Yota makes some amateurish blunders in the game at first, sinking to last place in a hurry. But Odin's advice starts to turn the game around, and Yota's plays go from the pathetic to the creative to being on the verge of outright cheating. But Kako Tengan, who's one of the moderators, is delighted by Yota's outside-the-box thinking. This is what she was hoping for in the Libertas Cup.

Again and again, Yota uses Odin's bizarre strategies to accrue points, and before long, he makes an "infinite play" to soar to first place and defeat the other frazzled players. Later, Yota meets the lovely Kako Tengan in person, only to realize that she comes on very strongly. She makes all kinds of PG-13 gestures and suggestions, causing Yota to panic. Eventually, Yota finally blurts out that Izanami is the only girl for him and he runs off, despite Kako's bodyguard trying to stop him.

Yota bumbles his way back to his friends, only to discover that Izanami left right after the tournament ended, rendering all of Yota's efforts moot. He collapses in comic despair, the victim of a totally different outcome from his ramen shop victory the other day. He's the loser this time, and only 13 days remain until Odin's prophesized apocalypse.
