takt op.Destiny: Takt & Cosette Are Unusual – Even in the World of Musicarts

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for takt op.Destiny Episode 3, "Awakening -Journey-," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Episode 2 of takt op.Destiny brought a sobering note to the story with the reveal of how Cosette came to be a Musicart. The tragedy that stole her from the world was a huge shock to Takt, who only managed to start smiling after he played the piano with Cosette. He does have her back, but in the form of a Musicart and she isn't quite the same. Cosette no longer smiles -- and no longer enjoys music.

takt op.Destiny began in media res, then took us into the past to before everything went wrong in Takt and Cosette's lives. Now, Episode 3 pulls viewers back into the present and shines light on Takt and Cosette's new relationship as Conductor and Musicart -- and how out of the ordinary it truly is.

Soon after her death and subsequent transformation, Takt and Cosette fight together for the first time against the D2s but are too overwhelmed to fend the monsters off. Luckily, another Conductor and Musicart named Lenny and Titan arrive in time to save them.

When he wakes up, Takt is reunited with his previously dismembered arm -- now with a large scar on his palm -- and Cosette claims that her name is now Destiny after Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5." As Cosette introduces herself, her voice is flat and monotone with her eyes glowing eerily. Takt is evidently spooked, especially after having a dream about her.

Lenny explains that the black meteorite, known as the Black Night Siderite, that crashed down on Earth is responsible for the D2s. The only ones who can stand against the D2s are the Musicarts, whose powers come from the other meteorites called Harmonia Ore. Thanks to the Musicarts and Conductors' combined efforts, the D2s halted their attacks.

Lenny's Musicart, Titan, is very different from Cosette. She's cheerful and bubbly, not unlike how Cosette before being turned. Lenny explains how the process Cosette went through to become a Musicart is different from the norm. Musicarts are usually created from individuals who show potential, then undergo a "rigorous process at the Symphonica research facility to awaken them" but Cosette has somehow skipped all of that.

Cosette devours Takt's life force whenever she fights, using it to battle the D2s -- which explains why Takt's arm always disappears and why blood seems to spread across his body. Because Cosette is now Destiny, her past self no longer exists; it's as if her memories never existed in the first place. What's more, something's wrong with Cosette: she's in an incomplete state and has trouble controlling her energy output as a result. If this continues as takt op.Destiny goes on, she might still end up dying.

In order to save Cosette, Anna and Takt take a road trip to New York to see the Symphonica with Lenny and Titan accompanying them partway. Lenny, however, worries that the D2s' appearance seems to be orchestrated by someone and is connected to an incident that happened 10 years ago in Boston -- right when Takt's father was killed.

Lenny is deliberately vague about this process, so it's unclear whether these individuals have to be dead in order to become a Musicart or if they are chosen. In Cosette's case, a number of factors went into her transformation. She was mortally wounded and died soon after. She was also attempting to protect someone she loved. Takt and Cosette also have a special bond through music, which may explain why Cosette takes his life force when she fights.

Set sometime into the future, Episode 1 of takt op.Destiny showed how Cosette and Takt have come a long way since, with Cosette being much better at controlling her powers and there's a comfortable rapport between them. Cosette did not care about music, yet she listens to Takt playing the piano. Is Cosette's humanity possibly returning?
