Studio Ghibli has debuted its first visual and a series of stills for Aya and the Witch, its very first CG movie!
Miyazaki Gorou, the son of Studio Ghibli co-founder Miyazaki Hayao, is directing the new feature. It is adapted from fantasy novel Earwig and the Witch, written by the late Diana Wynne Jones, whose Howl's Moving Castle inspired a much-loved Ghibli film of the same name.
The story follows a young girl who grows up without knowing that she is the daughter of a witch. One day, she is brought back to a strange house to live with a mean witch.
The film was set to premiere at the now canceled Cannes Film Festival and is now destined for broadcast on NHK this winter.
As the movie's director, Miyazaki commented that he hopes the movie will give encouragement to children and cheer up adults, two groups who might often find themselves at odds against the backdrop of Japan's ageing population.
