Stone Ocean: Who Is Jolyne, the First Female ‘JoJo’?

Fans of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure rejoice! Part 6 of Hirohiko Araki's manga magnum opus is finally being adapted into an anime, as recently announced during the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure the Animation Special Event ~JOESTAR Inherited Soul ~" live stream event. While every Part of Jojo is different from the last, the latest installment promises to be a marked change of pace. In fact, after five generations of Joestar men, Stone Ocean, features the very first female JoJo: Jolyne Cujoh.

Jolyne Cujoh is the central protagonist of the upcoming Part 6 adaptation, and with the expected Araki musical reference in her name, Jolyne pays homage to the classic Dolly Parton song "Jolene." With bleached hair and a snarky attitude, Jolyne is the perfect character to pass the torch to. Her confrontational attitude means she'll likely be plenty of fun to watch, especially in Stand battles.

Joylne's Stand is another reference to a classic song. Named "Stone Free" after the song by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, her Stand is just as unique as she is. Humanoid and blue, Stone Free's body is made almost entirely of the string it uses as its main Stand power, both on its own and integrated with Jolyne, who can unravel her own body into strings and manipulate them in a multitude of ways.

Jolyne is the daughter of Jotaro Cujoh, the JoJo of Part 3 who also featured in Part 4, making her the next direct descendent in the iconic Joestar clan. Descended from the original Jonathan Joestar, the franchise has thus far featured Joseph, Jotaro and Giorno. Jotaro was known to be ruthless, apathetic and extremely rude to women. But he was an absolute beast in Stand battles, which Jolyne could have inherited from him.

However, what's interesting about Jolyne is that when we first meet her in the manga, she doesn't have her Stand powers yet. She doesn't even know that Stands exist. This means that fans will get to see her full transition from an ordinary woman to a powerful Stand user. Another similarity to her father is that, when we first see Jolyne, she's on her way to jail. We find Jotaro already in a jail cell back in Part 3. While there are different stories to their respective introductions, it's a funny connection that binds them over multiple parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Like father, like daughter, even if their relationship is a tense one.

With the end of Part 5, Golden Wind, back in 2019, it's now been two years since we've had any new Jojo content. So it's amazing news to hear Jolyne is on her way to bring the anime back. It will be refreshing to see a woman take the lead in Jojo Stand battles and weirdness, especially with her versatile Stone Free. In Part 6 we'll also get a lot of character development with Jolyne as she matures from a powerless teen to a skilled Stand user, worthy of her family heritage and of her father's legacy.
