Spy X Family Uncovers New Art Ahead of Anime’s Premiere

New Spy X Family art has been released ahead of the premiere of the series' upcoming anime adaptation.

The new art depicts the dual nature of the series' main protagonists, the three members of the Forger family. While they appear to be a normal, happy family at first glance, a reflection that shows their true identities is seen below; the father, Loid, is actually an infamous secret agent, while his new wife, Yor, is secretly the world's most ruthless assassin. Their adopted daughter, Anya, is an escaped government experiment with psychic powers, and is consequently the only one with some awareness of both of her parents' real occupations.

The new anime series is being produced as collaboration between two of Japan's most highly-regarded animation studios: Wit Studio and CloverWorks. Wit is best known for producing the first three seasons of the Attack on Titan anime, and recently released the critically acclaimed Ranking of Kings. CloverWorks is the studio behind Wonder Egg Priority and Horimiya, and is currently riding high off the success of My Dress-Up Darling, which has been the breakout hit of the winter 2022 anime season. The Spy X Family anime is being directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who previously worked on shows such as Le Chevalier D'eon and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.

Spy X Family was originally created by writer and artist Tatsuya Endo in 2019. The series was originally released exclusively through Shonen Jump+, the digital manga spinoff of publisher Shueisha's popular Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The series has since been released in print and has become one of the biggest successes to emerge from Shonen Jump+, achieving a global circulation of over 12 million copies. Endo's espionage comedy has been a hit with critics as well, and in 2021 was nominated for an Eisner Award, though it ultimately lost to Remina, a sci-fi horror series from the celebrated manga creator Junji Ito.

Endo was one of the 42 manga artists selected to take part in the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project, which is being held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original publication Akira Toriyama's seminal martial arts manga. Endo's contribution to the project, an illustration of Goku and Krillin, was revealed earlier this month.

The new poster confirms that the highly anticipated anime adaptation of the series will premiere in Japan on April 9. Crunchyroll previously announced that it will stream the series outside of Japan, though the company has yet to confirm when the show will premiere on its platform.
