Sorry Sakura Haters, Boruto Clarifies She ISN’T Naruto’s Weakest Character

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 170, "A New Rasengan," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

During the Naruto series, a running and very unwelcome gag for fans was to deem Sakura as weak and unnecessary. Granted, the narrative missed the mark with her characterization a lot as it focused on the Naruto and Sasuke rivalry more than anything else, but there were some very pivotal moments when she helped Konoha win the Fourth Great Ninja War against the likes of the Akatsuki, Obito and Madara.

Still, it remained up for debate as to her strength, as she didn't get to really become the warrior many thought she would when the series started. But come the Boruto anime, we finally have confirmation from Sasuke himself that Sakura is, in fact, one of their strongest shinobi, and few ninja can walk in her shoes.

This conversation occurs when Sakura argues with Sasuke about Sarada pushing herself in training. She's worried about the effects the Sharingan will have on her daughter, but she's also projecting some of her personal insecurities. Sakura admits she feels like if Sarada becomes weak like her, she'll be in danger, but Sasuke immediately tends to his wife in a rare sentimental moment.

Sakura confesses she never felt strong but Sasuke's disappointed by this, recognizing that she really doesn't understand her value. He makes it clear Sakura was never weak -- not even when they were teens being trained as child soldiers by Kakashi in Konoha's Team 7. He reinforces that they couldn't do their job without her. Naruto's wife, Hinata, overhears this as she's monitoring Boruto's own training with Kakashi, and later on, she and Ino take Sakura out for a girls' night out. They too remind her how crucial she was in so many battles for Team 7, and that on numerous occasions, she actually helped save Sasuke and Naruto.

Sure, Lady Tsunade sensed her chakra strength and turned her into a medical ninja, but Sakura was still an amazing combatant -- even helping to beat Kaguya up. Her colleagues and friends know her worth in the field and also, given how she healed so many ninja during the war --risking her own life many times -- they lift her spirits up. Sakura always played an important role and they don't want her to forget she's a war hero, despite shifting towards a housewife's life now.

Ino even admits that while Sakura was jealous of her, she was jealous of Sakura, too. Ino didn't care if Sakura loved Sasuke as well, or if Sakura cut her hair to stand out over her; all that mattered to Ino was that she and the rest of the girls had to try to level-up to Sakura's standards. She inspired them, which is why Kakashi and Tsunade realized she'd have such a key role to play in the medical field as well. It's not just her power punches and brawn, it's her brain, and her girlfriends reaffirm what Sasuke said in order to build her confidence back up again.
