Shirobako Movie, the anime movie about people who make anime movies, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD this fall.
The new Blu-ray and DVD combo pack was announced by Shout! Factory and is being co-released with Eleven Arts. The physical copy of the movie will include extras such as trailers and a 4-page art booklet featuring the series' central characters. The movie was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, who also directed the original Shirobako TV series, and also worked on other anime such as Genshiken, xxxHolic and Crayon Shin-Chan. The Shirobako Movie was given a limited theatrical engagement at select theaters throughout North America early in August.
The very meta Shirobako series tells the story of five young women who met in their high school's animation club, and who all later go on to have careers within the anime industry. The series' main character, Aoi Miyamori, works as a production assistant in an anime studio, and is unsure of what role she wants to take up next. Fittingly, while the Shirobako series focused on the characters' day-to-day lives while they work on the production of a TV anime, the Shirobako Movie, which takes place four years later, is about how the team comes together to tackle a big budget animated theatrical feature.
Both the movie and the series were produced by studio P.A. Works. While the majority of anime productions are adapted from manga, P.A. Works has mostly made a name for itself with critically acclaimed original works, such as 2020's steampunk adventure Appare-Ranman! and the current season's extravagantly animated slice-of-life series The Aquatope on White Sand.
The Shirobako Movie Blu-ray/DVD combo pack will be released on Oct. 26.
