One Piece: The Gorosei Argue as [SPOILER] Emerges Off Wano’s Horizon

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1037, "Drunken Dragon Bagua," by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul, and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

As the Wano arc has fully reached its climax with Luffy and Kaido fully engaged in battle, the world outside the isolated country has been in crisis mode. The Reverie ended not long ago, and some major changes came with, among them, the termination of the seven warlords system. There's still more to the Reverie that readers have yet to learn, but chapter 1037 provided some tantalizing crumbs to theorize over.

In the last few pages of this chapter, the story changed location to Marijoa, the World Government Headquarters and home to the Celestial Dragons. There, the five most powerful men on the planet, the Gorosei (or simply Five Elder Stars), who run the government were arguing amongst themselves. One seemed agitated by the events that transpired during the Reverie, while another seemed less worried about the whole ordeal.

Wano was what was on the remaining Elders' minds. They were concerned with the battle between Kaido, the samurai, and the Straw Hats. An elder considered that they have the marines posted outside the territory strike once Nico Robin has been captured. Of course, readers know that hasn't happened yet. Another elder concurred, saying this battle would be a perfect opportunity to do away with any inconveniences that can easily be swept under the guise as casualties from either side.

Meanwhile, in the seas just outside Wano's borders, a fleet of marine vessels were anxiously awaiting orders. A terrified lookout in the crows' nest saw a massive shadow approaching. The elders were still fully amidst debate as the topic has moved onto a specific devil fruit. This devil fruit had apparently not been seen in centuries upon centuries and one elder even chalked it up as simply legend. Yet, another elder retorted "why would the government bother to give that one specific devil fruit another name?" He continued, stating that it must be to erase the fruit's name from the annals of history. The final panel ended on a massive elephant that wanders from out of the fog, approaching the marine vessels with ominous intent.

There's a lot to unpack with this chapter. The elephant that the chapter ended on, was likely Zunesha, the wandering elephant who carries the country of Zou on his back. However, this elephant could also just be a different Naitamie-Norida elephant who was drawn to the conflict in Wano for reasons unknown. Potentially, it could be Momonosuke or Luffy, as they were both able to hear Zunesha's voice with the "Voice of All Things" in chapter 821 when Momo asked the elephant to destroy Jack's fleet. It is likely that this elephant is drawn to Wano currently for the same reason.

The conversation between the elders was also of interest. They brought up a legendary devil fruit thought was thought just be a legend. It's possible this fruit was a talking point during the Reverie, which would explain why giving it a new name was discussed. This wouldn't be the first time, either, that the government has tried to erase something from the history books, just like with the void century. Although readers don't know what type of devil fruit it is, it must be extraordinarily powerful to have the Gorosei this rattled.
