One Piece Debuts the Straw Hat Pirates’ New Costumes

The Straw Hat Pirates will get another new set of costumes in the upcoming One Piece Film: Red.

As revealed by Mantan Web, Monkey D. Luffy and his crew will all get new looks in the latest One Piece movie. These new designs will be the second set of new costumes that the infamous pirate crew will put on in the film: another set of new clothes, which featured a more casual, vacation theme, was unveiled at the most recent Jump Festa convention. In contrast to the previously revealed costumes, the new designs feature much more elaborate and complex outfits for the crew as they take on more traditional pirate gear, including new tricorn hats for Luffy and Nami, and thick naval coats for Sanji and Jinbe.

One Piece Film: Red is the 15th theatrical release to come from the long-running series. Creator Eiichiro Oda is supervising production of the new movie. Oda previously revealed that the idea from the movie began with his desire to add a new female character to the story, stating "I am tired of drawing legendary old grandpas in movies! I want to draw a new little female character! That's the character I want to make now! And that's how it started." The script for the new movie is being penned by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who previously wrote One Piece Film: Gold. The new film is being directed by Code Geass' Goro Taniguchi.

The film will see the Straw Hats traveling to an island where a music festival is being held. Red-Haired Shanks, the captain of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the four emperors of the New World, will play a major role in the movie's story.

One Piece first set sail in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1998. In the 24 years since its debut, the story of Luffy and his quest to locate the treasure known as One Piece has become the best-selling manga series of all time, with approximately half-a-billion copies in circulation around the world.

The anime adaptation, which is produced by Toei Animation, first debuted in 1999 and has aired over 1000 episodes. The series was recently put on indefinite hiatus following a hacking incident targeted the animation company, which affected production on the series and also delayed the release of the next Dragon Ball movie. One Piece Film: Red was previously announced to have an August premiere date in Japan; it is unknown if production on the movie was also delayed by the cyber attack. An international release date for the movie has yet to be announced.
