One Piece Chapter 1036 Recap & Spoilers: Bushido is the Way of Death

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1036, "Bushido is the Way of Death," by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul, and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

Chapter 1035 picked up in the aftermath of Sanji's victory, with Queen being launched off Onigashima and into the air. Sanji turned to the woman he ran into in the hallway and handed her Chuji, her little mouse friend she risked her life to find. As he thought about how he also loved to feed the mice as a child, he collapsed. Back outside, Zoro was still fighting both King and his own sword Enma as it drained his Haki. Finally, King's face was revealed and he was confirmed to indeed be a Lunarian that the World Government was after. The two continued to clash, King thinking back to when Kaido helped him escape from captivity and giving him a new name. Driven by their loyalty to their captains, the two swordsmen traded blows until finally, Zoro was able to overpower King and finally end the fight.

The new chapter continues after Zoro's powerful blow against King, having sliced one of the Lunarian's wings in half. Even as he falls, King thinks about his captain, remembering a conversation the two about whether King was Joyboy or not. Kaido continues to deny it, asking if the world he is making is one that King really wants. King says that his life belongs to Kaido now, urging him to be the strongest and promising to fight so that he can become King of the Pirates. Zoro too reminisces about the very same promise he made to his own captain. His determination reignited, Zoro declares himself the King of Hell. As King falls, Zoro is officially declared the victor.

Zoro declares himself King of Hell

One of the Marys watches on, with another declaring the outcome to the CP0 masked member with two stripes along his right cheek. While this doesn't bode well, there are still two large contenders who can turn the tides of the battle. We zoom out to see how close Onigashima is to the Flower Capital, with boxed text reiterating that even if Luffy wins his battle with Kaido, the island will no longer be held up by the dragon's Flame Clouds. Momonosuke is still trying to hold the island in place, but he's struggling. Below the island, Yamato is still rushing to reach the armory before Kanjuro's Burning Hatred Spirit can. As he reaches the armory doors, Yamato comes across Rokki, a member of the Numbers taking a nap against the door. Thankfully, Fuga is right behind him, and Yamato tells him to take Rokki down quickly. Fuga charges Rokki, knocking down the door in the process. Yamato thanks him and asks him to hold Rokki down.

Meanwhile, Usopp is fending off a swarm of Animal Kingdom Pirates, protecting Kin'emon and Kikunojo. Kin'emon urges Usopp to take Kiku and run, with Kiku urging the opposite. Usopp threatens to just leave both of them and save his own skin. He asks what the point of even coming to the crawlspace was if they were both just going to give up and die. He starts lecturing them on how he doesn't like how they are willing to die for the sake of pride, that he doesn't care if he looks pathetic as long as he survives. His words have some affect on the samurai, but just as he seems to get through to them, he's about to be attacked by multiple opponents at once. Just then, Izo arrives, knocking them back. Usopp doesn't recognize him, but the pirates do. Izo holds his sister, saying they will have plenty of time to talk later. He orders Usopp to take both Kin'emon and Kiku to safety, surprising Usopp that he knows his name. Not wasting any time, Usopp and Hamlet make their escape as Izo readies to hold off the pirates.

Luffy and Kaido are having fun fighting

Back on the Third Floor, Raizo and Fukurokuju have places paralysis jutsu on each other. Fukurokuju points out that the fire has reached Raizo's side first and will most likely kill him before the jutsu wears off. Raizo stands firm as a Vassal of Lord Oden. Cutting to the Treasure Repository, Orochi is wondering what's taking Fukurokuju so long while he spends time with Komurasaki. He asks her to play his favorite song, to which she does. We then cut to the Second Floor Basement, where Inbi and Apoo are running away, leaving Zanki behind to fight the two masked CP0 members that were chasing Brook and Robin. Zanki falls and the CP0 report to their other members that Robin hasn't been captured. They are then told that the Lead Performers have been defeated. As the call continues, the third member declares that the outcome of this battle will fan the flames of change across the world. Even so, one of the other two simply asks, "Don't you think they've already hit the limit of what human beings can achieve?" We then cut to Luffy fighting Kaido, launching a Roc Gun attack and sending Kaido flying back as he also falls to the ground. The two stand, and both declare that they are having fun.

The next chapter of One Piece will be available on Sunday, January 16.
