My Hero Academia: Uraraka Ochaco’s D&D Alignment & What it Says About the Hero Uravity

My Hero Academia is set in the far future, where superpowered Quirks have changed the face of society forever. In this wild future, everyone must use their supernatural gifts responsibly, but there are always those who abuse their powers as criminals or villains. It falls to brave pro heroes like All Might and Mirko to stop them, and these heroes embody all that is righteous and just in the world.

All this can be described with the Dungeons & Dragons morality alignment chart, with villains like Shigaraki Tomura being Chaotic Evil and protagonists like Midoriya Izuku being Neutral to Lawful Good. Then there are side characters like Uraraka Ochaco/Uravity, and she has a distinct D&D alignment of her own as a budding hero. It defines everything that makes her who she is.

Uraraka Ochaco's D&D Alignment: Neutral Good

My Hero Academia: How Ochaco’s Role in the Series Has Grown

Like many of her classmates at the U.A. school, Ochaco has the Neutral Good alignment, which strikes a careful balance between the dogma of Lawful and the unpredictability of Chaotic, all while being firmly rooted in Good. Ochaco and her classmates are too young to be set in their ways as inflexible Lawful heroes, and students like Ochaco are discouraged from being too chaotic or rowdy either. At school, Ochaco and her classmates are expected to follow school rules and do what they're told, but they are also given room to innovate and devise their own methods in battle, and Ochaco has surprised her teachers more than once during events such as the U.A. sports festival. The same is true while interning with pro heroes such as Ryukyu.

A Neutral Good character is arguably the ideal type for a pro hero in the world of My Hero Academia, as these characters are fully committed to righteous causes while being more flexible than Lawful types and more stable than Chaotic ones. A Neutral Good character always puts the welfare of other people and society first, and such a character will risk their lives and make many sacrifices for the benefit of others, even without being asked to.

Neutral Good characters, by default, will shield the innocent from harm and punish Evil characters, and they tend to respect the law of the land while still having some creativity and flexibility in their methods. Neutral Good characters appreciate the value of the law, but they are still willing to bend the rules if they must, which sets them apart from Lawful Good characters. And unlike Lawful Good characters, Neutral Good characters don't always have a rigidly-defined personal code, which is both a strength and a weakness.

Uraraka Ochaco As A Neutral Good Character In My Hero Academia

Ochaco Gets Worried In My Hero Academia

Uraraka Ochaco has always been a Neutral Good person at heart, and being enrolled at U.A. is an opportunity for her to express her heroic spirit in true fashion. Like Izuku, Ochaco has a great deal of respect for the police, Japanese law and modern society as a whole, and she greatly prefers stability and order over chaos. At times, Ochaco leans more toward Lawful than Neutral, as she will gladly follow orders and doesn't like going rogue.

However, she shows a lot of flexibility in her thinking, and she's not afraid to change the rules to get what she wants. For example, Ochaco went against Asui Tsuyu's advice and rushed over to confront the dangerous criminal Toga Himiko, and this chaotic move resulted in Himiko obtaining a much-needed sample of Ochaco's blood. A more Lawful character would have done as Tsuyu said and ran off to get a teacher's help rather than recklessly fight a League of Villains member.

There was also the time Ochaco rushed over to help Izuku restrain his Blackwhip Quirk during the "Joint Training" arc, whereas a more Lawful character would have called for a teacher right away and allowed them to handle things according to protocol. Lawful characters don't like taking justice into their own hands -- instead, they act as instruments of the law, and Ochaco doesn't really do that. However, she rejects total chaos, and unlike her explosive classmate Bakugo Katsuki, Ochaco is willing to follow orders and fight as part of a cohesive team.

Ochaco's Chaotic side is balanced by her Lawful side, such as when she happily joined Izuku's cavalry team in the U.A. sports festival and humbly did her part to help the team achieve victory without trying to steal the spotlight. Ochaco is also a cooperative and humble student in class, and she was embarrassed to admit that she aims to become a pro hero for the money so she can support her parents. Ochaco is an excellent team player in Ryukyu's squad whole interning with Tsuyu and Hado Nejire, whereas a more Chaotic character would fight solo, such as Mirko. All this balances out to make Ochaco a Neutral Good character.
