My Hero Academia: Overhaul Vs. Shoto Todoroki – Who Would Win?

Many powerful heroes and villains alike populate My Hero Academia, and at the prestigious U.A. school, some students are already on par with Pro Heroes and villains -- despite still being in training. Mirio Togata, the boy with the Permeation Quirk, is one such hero, and Shoto Todoroki, the boy of ice and fire, is another student who can rival the big-league players.

But could Shoto take on the series' most powerful villains and survive, such as members of the League of Villains or the yakuza? Shoto could perhaps best be matched up against the mighty Overhaul, or Kai Chisaki, and use the full extent of his powers to try and take that mobster down. Overhaul, meanwhile, could confidently use his incredible Quirk to fight back. Let's find out who would win.

Shoto's Skills & Power

Shoto shooting fire from his arm

Shoto Todoroki has two Quirks in one, and that is no accident. His father, the flaming hero Endeavor, made sure to marry a woman with an ice Quirk (Rei) so their Quirks would balance each other out in their child, and that child is Shoto. Shoto's left side emits powerful flames inherited from his father that can rival Izuku's One For All techniques, and his right half creates ice that can rapidly envelop the entire battlefield in icy formations. Either side will put a strain on Shoto's body, with the ice half causing frostbite and the fire half causing heatstroke after too much use, but Shoto can alternate his Quirk to avoid those downsides, as Endeavor had planned. Shoto's Quirk is self-regulating.

In combat, Shoto has quickly proven himself a powerhouse student in more ways than one. He is fiercely determined to become #1 and prove himself superior to his detested father, striving even to surpass All Might himself, just like Katsuki Bakugo is trying to do. In addition, Shoto doesn't rely entirely on brute force; he is resourceful and can think on his feet, such as the time he plugged Tenya Iida's calf jets with small ice formations to shut down Tenya's Quirk during combat, or when he used explosive steam to blind his enemies during the hero license exam.

Shoto can block his enemies with his ice and form barriers, or he can form smooth ramps and slide along his ice at high speed to maneuver. If that weren't enough, Shoto can also trap his enemies in ice formations or impale them on spikes. As for the fire half, Shoto can quickly blast his enemies away with his fierce flames, but he doesn't yet have total control over this ability, since he hasn't trained with it much. As of Season 4, Shoto had relied mainly on his ice half, but his fire half is starting to catch up.

Overhaul's Skills & Power

Overhaul has a Quirk of the same name, which is somewhat reminiscent of alchemy from Fullmetal Alchemist, only without the arcane transmutation circles. His Quirk allows him to rearrange and reshape matter with a touch, right down to the molecular level. Often, Overhaul uses this ability to heal himself rapidly, even regrowing entire lost limbs to keep himself in the fight. His defensive options include reshaping the ground or walls (or anything else big enough) to form barriers to block enemy attacks -- and at high speed, too. Overhaul can also fuse his body with that of someone else to become larger and stronger, as he did in his final duel against Izuku.

On the offensive, Overhaul has just as many options. He can touch his opponent and blast them into pieces, such as when he killed the villain Magne from the waist up. Overhaul can also reshape the ground or other items into large, hard spikes to impale his enemies, or form fast-moving columns that can bluntly strike the enemy. If Overhaul's enemy throws a physical attack at him, he may either break it down to negate it or even turn it against the enemy. In theory, for example, he could reshape Cementoss's concrete formations and attack Cementoss with them. On top of all that, Overhaul has a creative mind that is even more resourceful and quick-thinking than Shoto's.

Shoto Vs. Overhaul: Who Would Win?

Shoto would likely begin this hypothetical battle the same way that he usually does: with an up-front barrage of ice, a blunt and direct assault that can overwhelm most enemies. But Overhaul is no ordinary enemy; Shoto's ice is solid matter, and that means Overhaul could tinker with it. Even if Overhaul is totally trapped inside the ice, he is able to touch it, and his Quirk would rapidly break down the ice so he can free himself. But he can do more: reshaping Shoto's ice and sending pointed formations of it right back at Shoto, who would counter either with more ice, or his fire.

These two fighters may keep breaking even for a time, but Shoto would probably be the one to get tired faster, and even if both fighters land blows on each other, Overhaul will be able to heal himself. Shoto has no major healing options. He does have a balm on hand, but that's not enough. Overhaul would keep turning Shoto's ice on him, and if Shoto decides to fight only with fire, then Overhaul will start using the ground instead -- creating walls to contain Shoto's flames and create spikes to damage Shoto. Eventually, Overhaul would land a critical blow and win the match.
