The news was revealed as part of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica 10th anniversary online event, as reported by Anime News Network. The event streamed a teaser trailer for the movie, confirming that the original series' creative team will be returning for the sequel, including director Akiyuki Shinbo, writer Gen Urobuchi and original character designer Ume Aoki. A teaser poster for the new film was also released, with the tagline "Now, let's continue the story."
