Lupin the Third Steals A Spot on Toonami’s Lineup

Lupin the Third Part 6 is coming to Toonami.

The programming block announced on its official FaceBook page that newest season of Lupin the Third will be joining its lineup on April 16. The show will air in the 1:30 A.M. Saturday night/ Sunday morning timeslot that was previously occupied by Made in Abyss, which will air its season finale on April 9. Lupin the Third Part 6 was originally broadcast in Japan from October 2021 – March 2022, and was simulcast exclusively on Sentai Filmworks' HIDIVE streaming service.

Lupin the Third Part 6 was first announced as part of the series' 50th anniversary celebration and marks the anime's return to TMS Animation, the studio that handled production of the series from 1971 – 2015. The season is also notable for featuring the last episode starring the final member of the original Lupin the Third voice cast, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, who provided the voice of Jigen for the past 50 years. Kobayashi retired from acting in 2021 and voiced Lupin's most trusted partner-in-crime one last time for Part 6's first episode. The role was then passed on to actor Akio Otsuka, a veteran voice actor who is best known for providing the Japanese voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid video game series and for his role as the heroic All Might in the popular My Hero Academia shonen anime.

Lupin the Third was created by manga artist Monkey Punch and was first published in 1967. The character of Lupin the Third is meant to be the grandchild of the famed literary thief Arsene Lupin, who was created in 1905 by French author Maurice LeBlanc. The series is widely regarded as one of the most influential anime and manga franchises of all time, as it helped to launch the directorial career of Hayao Miyazaki and served as a direct influence on numerous other works, including Shinichiro Watanabe's Cowboy Bebop.

Toonami has been constantly refreshing its lineup with new shows since the start of 2022. In addition to the previously mentioned Made in Abyss, the programming block has also added several other critically-acclaimed hits to its schedule in recent months, including Assassination Classroom, Attack on Titan: The Final Season - Part 2, and the return of One Piece to network TV. Toonami recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, during which it announced that it was producing two new seasons of the cult-classic anime FLCL.
