Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro to Get Theatrical Rerelease

Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro, the second film in the Lupin III anime franchise and the first movie directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, is getting a theatrical rerelease in American theaters.

The classic 1979 action-comedy, which tells the story of a gentleman thief who rescues a Princess from an evil counterfeiting Count, has been remastered in 4K. GKIDS' announcement was accompanied by a new trailer.

GKIDS is giving the rerelease a limited platform rollout, beginning at the IFC Center in New York City on July 16, before playing at the Landmark Westwood in Los Angeles and The Roxie in San Francisco on July 30. More locations and dates are planned to be announced throughout the summer.

The official summary of the film is as follows:

Academy Award®-winning director Hayao Miyazaki makes his feature film debut in this beloved chapter of the LUPIN THE 3rd saga.

In the twilight of his career, master thief Lupin III’s latest and greatest caper has hit a snag. What should’ve been bags of cash from a national casino turns out to be expert counterfeits! Together with his partner-in-crime Jigen, Lupin heads to the remote nation of Cagliostro to exact revenge.

Not everything goes as planned; the two encounter Clarisse, a royal damsel in distress being forced to marry the sinister Count Cagliostro against her will. Saving her won’t be easy, however, as Lupin and Jigen — together with the unpredictable lady thief Fujiko and the swordsman Goemon — must fight their way through a trap-filled castle, a deadly dungeon, and an army of professional assassins! Can Lupin rescue Clarisse, evade the cuffs of his long-time nemesis Inspector Zenigata, and uncover the secret treasures of the Castle of Cagliostro?

Since the release of the original 1967 manga by Monkey Punch, which was itself an unofficial sequel to Maurice Leblanc's classic Arsène Lupin stories, Lupin III has been adapted into five mainline TV series, plus the darker prequel series Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, as well as seven theatrical films and numerous OVAs and television specials. A Lupin III: Part Six TV anime was recently announced.

GKIDS will also be re-releasing the most recent Lupin III movie, the CG-animated Lupin III: The First, through Fathom Events on August 29 and 31.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who co-wrote the screenplay with Haruya Yamazaki, Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro returns to theaters in limited release beginning July 16.
