Kakegurui Creator’s High Card Anime Debuts New Trailer

High Card, the new anime from Homura Kawamoto, the creator of Kakegurui, releases a new trailer and art.

The new trailer offers an introduction to High Card's fantasy world. The series is focused around a special deck of magical playing cards, each of which grant their owner supernatural abilities. The series' five main characters are members of a secret society known as "High Card," which is dedicated to collecting all 52 cards and completing the deck. The anime is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2023.

The story for the new series was penned by Kawamoto and Hikaru Mino, who wrote the novelization of Kakegurui. The anime is being produced as a collaboration between TMS Entertainment (Lupin the Third, Tiny Toon Adventures) and Studio Hibari, the parent company of animation house Lerche (Assassination Classroom, Classroom of the Elite). The series will feature the voice talents of Gen Sato (Dr. Stone, Pretty Boy Detective Club), Toshiki Masuda (Haikyuu!!, My Hero Academia), Shun Horie (Rent-a-Girlfriend), Haruka Shiraishi (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime,) and Yuichiro Umehara (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans).

In addition to the anime series, the world of High Card will also be explored in separate manga and novel series.  This isn't Kawamoto and Muno's first attempt at building a franchise that spanned across multiple entertainment mediums: the duo also worked together to create the world and story for Build Dive -#000000 (Code Black), a multimedia franchise that told its story through an anime series and its associated collectible card game.

While he has worked on numerous other manga and anime series, Kawamoto is still best known as the creator of the hit gambling manga Kakegurui. The series debuted in 2014 and tells the story of Yumeko Jibami, a new student at Hyakkou Private Academy, an elite prep-school where students' social standings aren't determined by their wealth or lineage, but by their gambling ability. Kawamoto's original manga has over 5 million copies in circulation and has also spawned multiple spinoffs and adaptations. An anime adaptation was produced by studio MAPPA (Attack on Titan: The Final Season) in 2017, and the series has also been adapted into a live-action TV series and movie. An animated series based on one of its spinoff manga, Kakegurui Twin, will premiere this August.

The Kakegurui anime and live-action series are available for streaming on Netflix, and are also available on home video through distributor Sentai Filmworks. An international release for High Card has yet to be announced.
