Jujutsu Kaisen Celebrates Satoru Gojo’s Birthday with New Art

Dec. 7 is Satoru Gojo's birthday, and Jujutsu Kaisen's animation studio, MAPPA, is celebrating by giving fans a new piece of art featuring the sorcerer.

The colorful new artwork was released through MAPPA's official Twitter account. The illustration shows Gojo celebrating with the Jujutsu High students that appear in the series' upcoming prequel movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Panda, Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and the movie's main character, Yuta Okkotsu. In the universe of JJK, Gojo was born in 1989, meaning that he is now 32.

Satoru Gojo is one of Jujutsu Kaisen's most popular characters. While he maintains a playful demeanor with his students, he is in actuality one of the world's most powerful sorcerers. He is a key figure throughout Jujutsu Kaisen's story line, serving as a sort of mentor for the prequel's protagonist, Yuta, as well as Yuji Itadori, the central hero of the main manga.

The new art was also released to promote the upcoming release of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which will premiere in Japanese theaters on Dec. 24. Theater-goers will be given a special booklet with their movie ticket that includes commentary from the movie's cast and crew, including series creator Gege Akutami, as well as a special manga chapter by Akutami that tells more of Yuta's story. The movie's director, Sunghoo Park, recently revealed that the movie will feature new content that was not seen in the manga. Despite the series' massive overseas popularity, details about its international release outside of Japan have yet to be announced.

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the newest smash hits to emerge out of Shuiesha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The series was created by Gege Akutami in 2019, and in the three years since it was first published, the dark-fantasy series has already become one of the best-selling manga series of all time, already surpassing the lifetime circulations of other popular shonen manga hits, such as Haikyuu!! and My Hero Academia. According to Shueisha, the series will surpass a circulation of 60 million copies by the end of the year. If Akutami's story manages to maintain its current pace, it has a good chance of becoming only the 19th manga series in history to surpass a circulation of 100 million copies, joining the likes of Dragon Ball, Naruto and Demon Slayer.

The complete first season of Jujutsu Kaisen is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation. The manga is available in English in both print and digital formats from VIZ Media.
