Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Explores Yuta and Rika’s Relationship in Emotional New Trailer

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 released a more subdued new trailer that highlights the relationships of its characters.

The somber new preview for the movie was released through distributor Toho Animation's official YouTube channel is set to the movie's ending theme song, "Sakayume," performed by the band King Gnu. The trailer begins with the movie's protagonist, Yuta, thanking his Curse, Rika, for everything she has done for him, before flashing back to their lives together before Rika was transformed into a monstrous being. The preview also explores Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto's previous friendship, before circumstances forced the two powerful sorcerers to turn against each other. The new clips also show off some characters who did not appear in previous trailers, such as the greedy Mei Mei and the aloof Kento "Nanamin" Nanami.

The trailer has a different tone than the previously released previews for the movie, which highlighted the intense fight choreography and animation that director Sunghoo Park is known for. Park, who previously served as an animator on Yuri!! on Ice and directed the similarly combat-heavy The God of High School as well as the first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, revealed before Jujutsu Kaisen 0's release that he originally wanted to begin the TV series with Yuta's prequel story, but ended up starting the anime where the Gege Akutami's main manga series begins, with the introduction of Yuji Itadori.

The series' first movie tells the story of Yuta Okkotsu, a young man who once promised to marry his childhood sweet heart, Rika Orimoto. Unfortunately for the young couple, Rika passes away at a young age and her spirit is transformed into a Curse, a monstrous supernatural being born from the negative emotions of humanity. After being forced into a life of solitude by Rika's dangerous Curse, Yuta meets the sorcerer Satoru Gojo, who takes the haunted young man to Jujutsu High, where he learns how to use Rika's powers for good. Unfortunately, the two are also drawn into a conflict with Suguru Geto, a vengeful sorcerer who is seeking the downfall of humanity.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released on Japan on Dec. 24 and seems guaranteed to be one of the most successful anime movies in history. In the three weeks since the movie's release, it has earned 6.7 billion yen (approximately $58 million USD) at the box-office and is currently on track to outperform last year's highest grossing anime movie, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, which took in about the equivalent of $80 million USD during its entire theatrical run. Details about the movie's international release have yet to be announced.
