GotG 3’s Will Poulter Discusses Grueling Adam Warlock Diet and Workout Regimen

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Will Poulter shed some light on his diet and workout regimen for playing Adam Warlock in the Marvel Studios film.

"It’s been a lot of gym work and a very, very specific diet," he told The Independent. "It means not particularly civilised at times. Quantities of food you wouldn’t necessarily want to ingest. And other times not enough food. I’ve gone through a series of different diets over the last few months. Now I’m in a maintenance phase, which is quite nice. I’m not eating copious amounts of food to bulk, and I’m not cutting. I’m just maintaining my weight. I’ve gone through periods of looking at food and feeling like I can’t face it, and then you blink and the next minute you’re ready to eat furniture because you’re so hungry."

"The whole social side of your life has to take a back seat," he added. "I’m in a routine that is so rigid that being able to go out for dinner with friends is not something I’ve been able to do. I’m looking forward to being able to again."

Poulter previously discussed bulking up to play Adam Warlock, pointing to a comic book image of the Marvel character and saying, "I've been trying. Yeah, yeah. I've got a little bit of a ways to go, as you can see from that image."

The character who would become Adam Warlock -- first known as Him -- was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, making his debut in 1967's Fantastic Four #66-67. Adam Warlock proper was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, and he debuted 1972's Marvel Premiere #1. In both forms, however, he's proved to be a crucial part of the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, playing a significant role in the various Infinity storylines.

As for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warlock's debut was teased in one of the post-credits scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when the Sovereign's Ayesha was revealed to be in possession of his cocoon. Notably, a version of this cocoon was included as an Easter egg in both Thor: The Dark World and the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters May 5, 2023.
