Furuta: Making Sense of the Tokyo Ghoul Villain’s Convoluted Plan

Tokyo Ghoul was one of the biggest anime hits in 2014, running for many seasons until its finale in 2018. Due to the rushed storyline, the events leading to the series' conclusion left many fans confused. Since some essential information from the manga didn't make it into the anime, this affected the story of the big villain Furuta Nimura. What exactly happened to him, and what did he mean to accomplish?

Nimura Furuta's real name is Kichimura Washuu, but he was born as Souta Washuu-Furuta in the Furuta branch of the Washuu family. He is the illegitimate son of the previous CCG chairman and V member, Tsuneyoshi Washuu. Born as a half-human in the Washuu clan, he lived his entire childhood with Rize in the sunlit garden handled by the organization V. As a child, Furuta realized that all the members of the branch family never lived past age 30. Because of his bloodline, he knew that this was an inevitable fate, so he decided to live his life to the fullest.

Despite growing up almost raised like cattle to be used, Furuta found solace in Rize and seemed to have romantic feelings for her. To give her a chance for a different life, he helped her escape the clan. Years passed, and Rize became infamous for her strength and appetite. Having stayed with the Washuu family, Furuta managed to keep an eye on her. But because of her wild ways, he decided to punish Rize by dropping a steel beam on her as she attacks Kaneki. Unbeknownst to them, this event would change the courses of all of their lives. By involving Kaneki, Furuta created the very person that would fulfill his dream and end his life.

Furuta infiltrated several groups to learn about his enemies and control their movements to align with his goals. He was a ghoul investigator as Nimura Furuta, a member of Clowns as Souta, and aided in Professor Akihiro Kanou's experiments, which also turned him into a one-eyed ghoul. By slowly ridding himself of his enemies and merging his allies, V and Clowns, he finally decided to overthrow his father and kill him.

Furuta leads the CCG's attack on the Clowns. During the siege, the investigators find out that some of the masked individuals are humans. After taking full control as the new director, Furuta uses this information to further direct hatred at ghouls. His first official order is sending hoards of Oggai members to Kaneki and Toka's wedding. The ghouls are overwhelmed and are at a disadvantage. In desperation to protect Toka and their unborn child, Kaneki turns into a dragon, saving the ghouls but ruining the city and killing hundreds of people in the process. Furuta rejoices, as even Kaneki's transformation is a part of his plan.

It turns out that the chemicals secreted by the dragon mass are turning ordinary humans into ghouls. Additionally, ghoul monsters are being born all over the city from it. Furuta encourages this development, as he had known this would happen all along. To face this great threat and Furuta, the ghouls and remainder of the CCG combine. Toka finds Kaneki, and every human and ghoul do their part to stop more bloodshed. The series' final battle occurs as Kaneki finds Furuta at the root of the dragon mass. In spite of his power, he loses to Kaneki and finally expresses himself. It is during the last moments of his life that he voices out his real wish, to live as a regular person.

Born as a human with ghoul blood, Furuta could never live a normal life. The very blood flowing in his veins prevented that, and he hated it. Everything Furuta did until the end was revenge upon the system and family that trapped him. What he had said in jest were his actual emotions. That when Eto asked what it was that Furuta wanted, his reply of "super peace" was his wish for himself. Knowing it could never come true, he did what he could -- destroy everything that had created him and his situation so he could finally be free, even if it led to his end.
