Fruits Basket Reveals the Zodiac Curse’s True Origin

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fruits Basket: The Final Season Episode 11, "Goodbye," now streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation.

Episode 11 of Fruits Basket: The Final Season, opens where the previous episode left off -- with Tohru running away from Kyo on sight when she leaves the hospital. This time, however, the scene is shown from her perspective. As she runs, she's thinking that she still wants to be with Kyo but her body is instinctively avoiding him. She's understandably confused, but as the episode progresses, confusion gives way to clarity.

"Goodbye" finally reveals the origin of the zodiac curse, and how the curse is broken once and for all.

When Kyo gets the chance to speak with Tohru, he apologizes for rejecting her earlier and finally confesses that he loves her back. Tohru accepts both the apology and the confession, and not only do the two of them kiss, but Kyo is even willing to hug her in public, even if it means he'll turn into a cat. In this moment of love overcoming fear and self-hatred, Kyo hugs Tohru... and he doesn't transform. His curse is finally broken.

At this point, Fruits Basket reveals the full story of how the curse came to be. Rather than being tricked out of a banquet with God by the Rat as the legend traditionally states, it turns out the Cat was God's first friend and the inspiration for the animal banquets. When the Cat died, God decided to resurrect the Cat and form bonds with all the zodiac animals so that their souls would always reunite even after they die. However, this supposed act of kindness was done without the Cat's consent, and when it came back to life, the Cat rejected immortality in favor of letting go. It was this that caused the Cat to be rejected from the zodiac and given its extra curse.

Akito, the current and now final incarnation of this "God," is finally learning what the Cat tried to teach her original incarnation. Tohru has given her permission to stop judging herself as "impure." Now Akito cries out to God for permission to just be her own person, in all her weakness and uncertainty, and offers an intense plea that her family cries for her.

Not only is Kyo's curse broken, but all the cursed Sohmas are freed from the curse. Ayame finally hugs his girlfriend, Rin, Kisa and Hattori break into tears, Ritsu and Kagura are in shock and Shigure... basically just shrugs. Yuki's response to the curse breaking is the only one not shown -- that will warrant its own scene next week.  The Sohmas can finally learn how to be human.

New episodes of Fruits Basket: The Final Season premiere Mondays, subbed on Crunchyroll and dubbed on Funimation.
