First Details for Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Part 2 Revealed

Gundam animation studio Sunrise is still working on the next chapter of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, and studio producer Naohiro Ogata revealed a few small, but important details about the next movie in the series.

Ogata announced the title for the second part of the series during a Gundam roundtable discussion held in Tokyo on Sept. 2. Tentatively titled Son of Bright, the sequel movie will feature the return of Bright Noa, the father of protagonist Hathaway Noa and one of the key figures of the Universal Century timeline. Bright's original voice actor, Hirotaka Suzuoki, passed away in 2006, so his role will now be filled by Ken Narita, who previously voiced Bright in the 2010 Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series, and is also known for playing the role of Sesshomaru in Inuyasha and its follow-up series, Yashahime.

Ogata also revealed that the second part of the Hathaway will series will feature some narrative changes from its source material, the Hathaway's Flash novel. Ogata did not go into any specifics about what would be changed. The original novel was published in 1989 and was written by series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, who also wrote and directed the original 1979 Gundam anime, as well as the theatrical release Char's Counterattack. Hathaway's Flash and the first movie based on it deal directly with the aftermath of Char's Counterattack, including how the events of the movie affected the young Hathaway Noa. Hathaway's remaining trauma and disillusionment with war eventually pushes the young man to become a key figure within MAFTY, a terrorist organization that directly opposes the Earth Federation government that Hathaway's father, Bright Noa, fights for.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway was released in Japan earlier this summer to the best box office performance of any movie in the Gundam franchise in over three decades. The movie made its international debut on Netflix just three weeks after it premiered in Japanese theaters.
