A new trailer for the Adult Swim/Crunchyroll original anime co-production Fena: Pirate Princess announces the show's premiere date and offers up the first taste of its English dub.
Directed by Kazuto Nakazawa (Kill Bill Vol. 1's anime sequence, B: The Beginning) and animated by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, FLCL), Fena: Pirate Princess will premiere on Adult Swim's Saturday night Toonami action/anime block Aug. 14 at midnight ET/PT. Toonami will air the episodes in English, while the Japanese version will be uploaded subtitled the following day on the Crunchyroll streaming service.
Featuring many of the same scenes shown in the Japanese trailer released at the 2021 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the new trailer for Fena: Pirate Princess introduces the series' heroine Fena, a woman who survived a shipwreck as a child and has been living on an island for the past 10 years. Trying to escape a forced engagement to a man she doesn't know, she is found by a team of pirate-samurai entrusted by her father to protect her. Working with the ragtag crew of warriors, Fena promises to continue a mysterious quest left to her by her father.
Nakazawa has described Fena: Pirate Princess as a blend of shojo and shonen tropes, and the trailer promises both character drama and bloody action sequences. Interestingly, the trailer's narration describes the premiere as being "Season 1" of Fena: Pirate Princess, implying the show is set to continue for at least two seasons. Fena: Pirate Princess is the first anime produced by Toonami since the FLCL sequels in 2018. Future Toonami originals include Blade Runner: Black Lotus (premiering this fall), Uzumaki (premiering in 2022) and an as-of-yet unscheduled adaptation of the Shenmue video game series.
Crunchyroll's official synopsis of the series is as follows:
Fena: Pirate Princess tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Fena Houtman, living in a fantastic alternate history version of the 18th century. Fena has been raised on an island where there is no hope of escaping the dark destiny forced upon her by her captors, to be used and discarded by the soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors. Her goal: escape her captors, forge a new identity, and search for a place where she can truly belong and find out the true mystery behind the keyword: "Eden." It's the story of the adventure of a lifetime she and her crew of misfits and unlikely allies will have, in pursuit of her goals!
Fena: Pirate Princess premieres on Adult Swim Aug. 14 at midnight ET/PT and will stream on Crunchyroll the following day.
