Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time premiered Aug. 13 to the excitement of fans of the long-running anime franchise and quickly became the most-watched video on Amazon Prime Video.
According to Siliconera, Amazon announced that the latest Evangelion movie set an all-time record for day-one viewership since the company launched its streaming service in Japan in 2015. The movie is also Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno's highest-grossing film to date; it earned a total of 10.23 billion yen (roughly $93.4 million) in box office revenue in Japan.
Multiple companies are leveraging fan excitement for Thrice Upon a Time for merchandising and advertising purposes. For example, American film distributor GKIDS announced the re-release of the original Evangelion anime, and Taco Bell recently released an Evangelion-themed commercial to sell its nacho fries.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time is the most recent revision of the fourth and final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy and is marketed as the definitive conclusion to protagonist Shinji's story. While the movie may be the end for Shinji, it might not be the end for Evangelion as a whole, with Anno teasing a possible continuation for the franchise.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the original Japanese or in 11 dubbed languages. The rest of the Rebuild of Evangelion series is also available on the streaming service.
