WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 74, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English through Viz Media.
Since his introduction in Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta has lost a lot of fights. However, the Saiyan Prince has always kept his bruised chin up and gone on to the next battle in the hopes that he might prove himself superior to Goku. Now, Dragon Ball Super Chapter 74 has explained just what Vegeta likes so much about fighting.
In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 73, Goku faced off against Granolah. While Goku's Ultra Instinct transformation seemingly gave him the edge in the battle, Granolah used a bit of trickery to get a sneaky blow on the Saiyan that knocked him out of the fight. This then forced Vegeta to step in and take on the last Cerealian.
At the start of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 74, Vegeta tries to convince Granolah that he's not an ally of Freeza -- whom the Cerealian is targeting. Granolah, though, doesn't believe his opponent. Their battle then kicks off, and Granolah proves himself the superior fighter. Vegeta tries a tactical retreat, but Granolah is easily able to catch up. Granolah then admits that he's impressed by how strong the Saiyans actually are, though he brags that he's still the strongest fighter in the universe. And Vegeta doesn't disagree. However, the Saiyan Prince still believes he'll win the fight. Initially, Granolah thinks that Vegeta's ego might be keeping him from seeing just how hopeless his cause really is.
The two start fighting again, and Vegeta gleans that Granolah is quite inexperienced with his new powers. The Saiyan Prince, for his part, believes his training and experience will give him the advantage in the end. But Granolah still insists that he's the stronger fighter and that Vegeta cannot possibly win. "That's the great thing about a battle," Vegeta says. "The outcome is never quite set in stone. It's exactly what I love about fighting."
Thanks to his new transformation, Vegeta may just be able to triumph over Granolah. However, their conversation does a good job of elucidating just why Vegeta -- despite his constant losses -- still fights and tries to win. For the Saiyan Prince, the unpredictability of a battle and its outcome -- the struggle to succeed -- is worth it in and of itself. Battle, one could say, is Vegeta's passion.
Vegeta and Granolah's fight will continue in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 75, which releases on Aug. 18 through Viz Media.
