Dragon Ball Super Reveals Granolah’s Shocking Connection to Goku’s Father

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 76, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English through Viz Media.

Since his first appearance in Dragon Ball Super, Granolah has had one goal: Wipe out the Saiyans in exchange for them having destroyed nearly all of the Cerealians. This led him into conflict with Vegeta and Goku, whom he's easily overwhelmed using his incredible abilities. However, in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 76, Monaito reveals a secret to Granolah that could change everything: Goku's father saved his life.

At the start of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 76, Granolah continues beating Vegeta, whose Ultra Ego transformation has proven insufficient to take down the last Cerealian. While Goku intervenes, Vegeta eventually ends up in combat again, taking his fight with Granolah to a Sugarian city. This causes Granolah to have a flashback to when the Saiyans in their Great Ape forms destroyed Planet Cereal. From there, Granolah snaps and continues attacking Vegeta, despite the Saiyan Prince attempting to talk down the last Cerealian.

Granolah knocks Vegeta out of the Sugarian city and then prepares an energy blast so powerful that it will wipe out both himself and the Saiyan Prince. However, Granolah gets interrupted when Oatmeel returns in their ship with Monaito -- Planet Cereal's Namekian. Oatmeel shouts at Granolah, which distracts him just long enough for Goku to hit him and stop the energy attack before it happens.

Granolah, angry Monaito and Oatmeel have interfered, tries to berate them, saying, "Stand back and let me finish this!! I just want it to end! I need this to be over!!" However, Monaito replies, "You've got some facts wrong, Granolah. Sorry to say, it was a lie of mine that brought you here. There was one Saiyan who didn't earn your vengeance. [...] Forty years back, the one who actually saved us... was a Saiyan named Burdock." This surprises Granolah, as he didn't realize a Saiyan had saved him and Monaito.

While Monaito doesn't launch into the story in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 76, there's a good chance that will be the subject of next month's issue. However, this is still a huge revelation. Burdock is, presumably, Bardock, Goku's father. While the name spelling isn't quite identical, Viz Media's translations often differ a little from the norm, Burdock is a valid alternate spelling for Bardock and has been used at different points over the years. This connection then could change the fight between Goku and Granolah, as the former's father literally saved the latter. He's proof that not all Saiyans are bad, and that good ones still exist in Universe 7, which might just end the battle between Granolah and Goku once and for all.

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 77 releases on Oct. 20 in English through Viz Media.
