Dragon Ball Super: Does Gohan Have a Secret Healing Ability?

Dragon Ball Super brought back Future Trunks, one of the breakout characters of Dragon Ball Z. However, Super's version of the character was slightly different than before, boasting new powers and abilities. One of these powers was the ability to heal both himself and others, an especially useful tactic in the heat of battle.

Due to the circumstances surrounding Future Trunks' healing powers, many believe that Gohan should have these powers, as well. However, the answer as to whether or not he does has to do with the very different lives they've both lived and their connections to the Supreme Kais. Here's a look at why the Super version of Trunks can use healing powers and why the mainstream universe Gohan can't.

Why Future Trunks Has Healing Powers

In the manga version of Dragon Ball Super, Future Trunks is a student of his timeline's version of Shin. The ability to heal was actually revealed to Trunks by Shin, who helped him hone it. From then on, he would have active control over the ability, using it to not only heal himself but also keep others alive. Before he discovered this ability, he had actually been using it inadvertently. This kept allies of his like Future Mai safe and in health whenever they were faced with danger.

This begs the question of whether or not Gohan also has this ability. After all, Gohan trained with the Kais briefly in his own timeline, and like Trunks, used the Z Sword for a time. There's one major difference, however, that explains why only Trunks and has this nifty skill.

Why Gohan Doesn't Have Healing Powers

Unlike Future Trunks, Gohan does not have this Kai-derived healing ability. This is because the extensive training that Shin gave Trunks, Gohan never received from any of the Kais. Said training involved a rather ridiculous regimen in which Trunks had to actually dance around one of the Kais for an entire day.

Likewise, Shin in the Future Trunks timeline had already lost Kibito Kai, whereas Kibito was still alive when Gohan trained with the Supreme Kai. This meant that Shin had to teach these methods to Trunks in order to pass down the knowledge. On the other hand, Gohan's training with the Supreme Kais segued into his battle with and subsequent defeat at the hands of Majin Buu. This led to Goku returning as the protagonist and Gohan leaving the spotlight. His Kai training wouldn't resume, and he would instead take on a life of a scholar and husband by the time of Dragon Ball Super.

In other words, his only getting a brief taste of Kai training and not the full thing is why Gohan was never able to unlock the healing powers that Future Trunks would develop. It's possible that he still could if he put in the time, but it's obvious that the character is much more interested in the life of a civilian than anything else.
