Dragon Ball Super: Could Goku and Vegeta Use Gogeta to Beat [SPOILER]’s Wish?

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 78, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English through Viz Media.

The dragon ball abuse is getting out of hand in Chapter 78 of the Dragon Ball Super manga as yet another wish has been made for a fighter to be powered up to the strongest in the universe. When the Heeters receive word that the battle between Granolah, Goku and Vegeta has stopped, the planet brokers decide to put their plans into action by making a wish of their own. Elec summons Monaito's dragon and wishes for Gas, the Heeters' muscle, to become the strongest in the universe. With the Cerealian and Saiyans exhausted from their fight as this new threat enters the fray, it may be time for Goku and Vegeta to start dancing.

Despite their aversion to teamwork, Goku and Vegeta surely realize the value of having Gogeta in their back pocket for dire circumstances such as this. Vegito isn't an option, as the two Saiyans don't currently have any Potara Earrings, but luckily, the Fusion Dance can be performed at their leisure. Historically, when Gogeta arrives on the scene, the party is over. It’s possible that Gas would still be more powerful than the Fused Saiyan, but considering Gogeta's power is capable of breaking holes into other dimensions, it feels unlikely that Gas could stand up to him.

If Elec made the same wish that Granolah did, Gas is only the strongest fighter in the universe for the moment. As Vegeta explained during his fight with Granolah, new threats can always emerge and fighters are liable to unlock new power at any time. Obviously, Goku and Vegeta were not Fused when Elec made his wish, so Gogeta didn't technically exist; thus, his power wasn't factored into Gas' rise to strongest in the universe. Given that Granolah, Goku and Vegeta are all wounded and exhausted while Gas is at full strength, the Saiyans might have no choice but to set aside their pride in order to survive.

However, the fact that Goku and Vegeta were both so savagely beaten by Granolah makes it unlikely they'd be able to Fuse even if they wanted to. The Metamoran Fusion Dance requires the participants to be of equal strength, and as the questionably-canon battle of SS4 Gogeta vs. Omega Shenron in Dragon Ball GT showed, even the reliable Fusion dance can fail if one of the participants is weakened beforehand. Vegeta and Goku are both majorly depleted of strength, and Goku was only partially healed by Monaito, so it's highly unlikely they'd be able to pull off a successful Fusion in their current state.

Goku and Vegeta sense Gas' approach in the Dragon Ball Super manga

Worse, the precise wording of Elec's wish for Gas to be the strongest in the universe is unknown. There's a fifty-fifty chance that his wish took place off-page to avoid a repetitive "strongest in the universe" wish scene or to save for a dramatic reveal of exactly how Elec phrased his wish. It's conceivable that he wished for Gas to always be the strongest in the universe, thus eliminating the flaw in Granolah's wish that has allowed Gas to surpass him. If Elec did indeed specify his wish in this way and a full-powered Gogeta did then appear, Gas would receive a major power-up in order to remain the strongest.

In their ongoing effort to pretend they aren't best friends, and probably because they're too weak, Goku and Vegeta are unlikely to Fuse into Gogeta to fight Gas. It's possible that Gogeta could turn the tide of the battle, but it's also possible that Gogeta could cause Gas' power to increase even further, depending on what Elec's wish actually was. While a Granolah and Gogeta tag team would be a fight for the ages, all signs indicate that the exhausted warriors are about to learn a painful lesson in humility at the hands of the powered-up Gas.
